Hurst v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 48 runs
Match report
An amazing performance from Gary Waterston brought Thatcham II a maximum 25 point haul from their visit to Hurst on Saturday. The 19 year old took his maiden five wicket haul and then celebrated by taking another five immediately to finish with figures of 10-52 from 15.3 overs as Thatcham won with nine balls to spare.
Hurst had earlier won the toss and fielded and although the outfield was damp the wicket was bone dry. The promising Sean Huckins opened up with Matt Denness and the pair took advantage of some loose stuff early on before Denness was beaten for pace by Knowles.
15 year old Jamie Young, on second team debut, then joined Huckins and the pair added 26 before Huckins showed his lack of experience in going for a big shot too early to be on his way for 20.
The major partnership of the innings then followed as Stuart Newman, in his final game for the club before moving to Scotland, and Young played themselves in against the spinners before accelerating at just the right time. Newman dominated the partnership but the performance of Young confirmed what a fine prospect he is. They put on 119 in 28 overs before Young, trying to get on with it, fell for 34.
Newman looked well on course to make amends for missing out on a century last week as he started to despatch the bowlers at will but in going for the shot to get him there he could only find the fielder at extra cover as he went for 97.
Simon Rider led the middle order flurry at the end with an enterprising 29 as Thatcham ended their 52 overs on 235-7. Knowles with 4-87 and Sheeta 3-79 took the wickets for Hurst.
With the wicket offering plenty of help for the spinners Thatcham opened with John Williams and the left arm seam of Waterston. Sheeta was positive from the start, surviving a very sharp chance to silly point off Williams, before Waterston got underway as Sheeta played on for 20.
Hurst certainly showed their intention to chase the runs and were going nicely at four an over when Waterston struck twice in an over to reduce them to 52-3 and he finished his first spell with 3-30 from eight.
Knowles was given a flying start to his innings with some loose bowling and he hit the ball with a lot of power and threatened to win the game for the home side. Simon Rider bowled well without luck but with seven wickets in hand and 78 needed from twelve overs Hurst were favourites to win.
Waterston came back and was hit for eight in his first over as Knowles raced past fifty but his next over saw the breakthrough as Cronin was bowled for 27 and the big wicket of Knowles followed in his next over, caught behind for an excellent 74.
From then on it was a procession as Higgs was well caught at slip by Huckins, adjusting his position following a couple of late cuts from the batter. Young was trapped in front and Hawkes bowled in the same over to make it eight and with the game out of Hurst’s reach it was just a question of whether Thatcham and Waterston could get the last two wickets. Williams came close a couple of times to taking one himself but the ninth wicket fell as Warlow was bowled with the last ball of Waterston’s penultimate over.
So to the 47th over of the innings, Waterston’s last, and number 11 Burgess on strike. The first two balls almost got through before the third crashed into the middle stump to complete a remarkable effort, especially his second spell which was 7.3-2-22-7, and overall 15.3-2-52-10.
