Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Stoke Green on Sat 26 Jul 2008 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 97 runs
Match report
Thatcham Town recorded a season boosting 25 point win over relegation fighting Stoke Green Cricket Club. With memories of the last two league results still fresh in the mind stand in skipper Simon Rider won the toss and took the initiative by electing to bat on a lovely summer’s day.
The decision proved correct as the opening pair of Rider and Chris Brown (34) raced to 50 within the opening ten overs of the game. Positivity was the key to the innings for Thatcham as some indifferent bowling was punished by both batsmen. A mistimed hook by Brown brought about his demise, however, Sean Huckins joined Rider and pushed the scoring rate on and past the 100 mark. Runs still seemed easy to come by for the Thatcham pair but it was Rider who dominated notching his second league century of the season in an effortless manner. The fall of Huckins (21) gave Felix Hartley Russell the opportunity to build a solid partnership with the skipper. He did so being very watchful against both spin and seam. With a platform being built gradually, Hartley-Russell opened up and began scoring at a quick rate. It took a good piece of bowling to remove him for (12) but with Rider still at the crease, a score of at least 250 look on the cards. It was the fall of skipper for a magnificent 113 that seemed to put the breaks on for Thatcham as a steady collapse saw the loss of Steve Bird, Paul Jenkins and Liam Redmond all to unnecessary shots. With the tail not wagging for too long Thatcham’s innings closed in the 48th over, for a seemingly under par total of 228. It was to be Pete Edgecombe’s 14 that proved the only resistance from the lower order. Rider’s important innings of 113 was the highlight of the Thatcham card with Ifras and Mughal both picking up four wickets each for the visitors.
After a lovely tea Thatcham set about the task of bowling Stoke Green out. With 52 overs in which to do it, the home side back themselves and were rewarded early with a fine start as both openers were removed with just six runs on the board. A solid partnership followed with the Thatcham openers of Edgecombe and Jenkins trying everything to remove the belligerent Ifras who looked settled on batting for the draw. It was his partner Younis who cracked first, running himself out to the dead eye of Rider. With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Perry Moore came into the attack with Edmund Edge and bowled well in tandem. It was Edge who stuck first removing Ifras for a very watchful 32. This gave Thatcham the chance they were looking for, as Moore took two wickets in two balls followed by Edge claiming his second wicket of the innings. It came down to Thatcham needing two wickets with ten overs remaining. Rider tried everything to bag the last two with Moore, Mahoney, Edgecombe and Jenkins all trying to find a way through the defences. It was to be Tim Mahoney that struck the first blow removing Maullan but the final pairing continued to cling on to the draw. A change of ends for Jenkins produced a needless shot from Hasioszyn and with Liam Redmond taking the catch Thatcham had grabbed a useful 25 points, with Stoke Green all out for 131 in the 48th over.
Wickets were shared about the Thatcham attack, with Jenkins 2-20, Mahoney (1-23), Edge 2-15, and Edgecombe (1-34) but it was Moore (3-23) who proved to be the pick of Thatcham’s bowlers.
