Match report A fine all round performance from Paul Jenkins saw Thatcham II complete a second successive victory away to Reading III on Saturday.

Following a rain delayed start the match was reduced to 80 overs and when Robb Fraser won the toss he had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat on a damp, green wicket.

Jenkins and Peter Edgcombe caused problems from the start, Jenkins for the umpires who spent the first two overs stretching their arms and calling wide or no ball. However, once he fixed his radar he produced a fine spell of bowling as Reading were reduced to 59-4. Edgcombe was unfortunate not to take any wickets as on the rare occasions the batsmen did manage to lay bat on ball the five chances offered went down.

Once Jenkins ran out of steam John Williams replaced him and broke through immediately, showing Edgcombe the way by hitting the stumps and not relying on his fielders. Only Tucker looked at all at ease, scoring 38 not out as Reading reached 116-7 from their 42 overs. Jenkins took 4-35 from 16 overs, Williams 3-26 from 5 and Edgcombe 0-47 from 21.

Jenkins just about recovered from his long spell in time to open the batting along with Martin Keep and the pair wasted no time in chasing the low score, taking advantage of some short bowling and the drying wicket to tick along nicely at four an over. Jenkins was the more fluent and he passed fifty for the first time this season with a fine hook for four.

The partnership reached 98 when Keep (33) decided to give someone else a chance as he chipped one to point. Sean Huckins then reverse swept everything to finish 6 not out but, as with his bowling, Jenkins couldn’t see it through to the end as he was bowled for 72 but Thatcham still got home in the 27th over for the loss of three wickets.
