Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Hurst on Sat 23 Aug 2008 at 12.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Thatcham earned a vital win against fellow league strugglers Hurst at Brownsfield on Saturday, but it could have been a very embarrassing defeat.
Hurst won the toss and elected to bat, but this looked to have backfired as Thatcham made early inroads with Edgcombe bowling Cronin with only 15 on the board. Hawkes came in and looked to be positive, but when Edgcombe forced him to cut a ball too close to his body, he could only chip it to Williams at gully who safely took the catch. Wickets then continued to tumble through excellent bowling from Mahoney and Williams, and Hurst were soon 60-6. Higgs and Bates then looked to get Hurst back on track, with a mixture of good defence and capitalising on anything loose. They had put on 50 when Williams accounted for Higgs for a well made 36. Hurst finished on 129 for 9 from their 52 overs, which looked to be well short of a defendable target.
Hurst opened with spinners Higgs and Gent, who tied down Rider and Brown so much in the first 10 overs, that Rider tried to slog Higgs out of the ground and got bowled. This brought Keep to the wicket, who didn’t fare too well, being bowled through the gate by Higgs. This brought Huckins to the crease who tried to take the game to the Hurst attack, but after some well timed boundaries, and Thatcham on 35-2, was adjudged LBW reverse sweeping. Thatcham then lost the wickets of Brown, Young and Williams for 1 run, with some loose shots, to leave Thatcham reeling on 36-6.
Edgcombe then joined 15 year old debutant Jack Andrews with plenty of overs left but an uphill battle. Showing patience and maturity beyond his years, Andrews had put on 41 when he was bowled for 15, by the unorthodox left armer Burgess. Moore followed not long after, to a decent ball from Burgess, which brought the evergreen Tim Mahoney to the crease at 76-8.
With Mahoney showing his cast-iron defence, Edgcombe was able to play a few shots without taking undue risks, and the pair gradually started whittling down the score. Hurst took off Higgs, and replaced him with Holscroft, but the plan backfired as Edgcombe and Mahoney were quick to put away the bad ball. Hurst then went back to their spinners again, but by this time Thatcham were in the ascendancy, and apart from one scare when Mahoney was dropped at slip, it didn’t take too long for Edgcombe to hit the winning runs. The last pair had put on 56 for the 9th wicket, with Mahoney hitting 14 not out and Edgcombe an excellent 59 not out.
