Match report Thatcham 3RD XI’s season climaxed by gaining promotion after claiming 13 points in their drawn game with Finchampstead 4th xi.

Credit should also go to the ground staff at Henwick for enabling the match to go ahead.

Skipper Malcolm Bloor elected to bat in search of 25 points, but soon lost Bob Gadsden to a very sharp stumping. Mike Hobbs continued his good form as he and Nic Monger (64) shared in an excellent partnership of138 for the 3rd wicket allowing those to follow to push towards 200. Hobbs eventually falling for a well crafted (83). Wickets were lost in the pursuit of quick runs, but the 200 target was never in doubt and the Thatcham innings closed on 217-9 from 51overs. M.Simmonite (4-64) was the most successful Finchampstead bowler who was well supported by the Finchampstead fielders in difficult conditions.

Thatcham opened up with slow medium and although Nic Voller (1-30) made an early breakthrough wickets were hard to come by. Mongers (2-41) off spin appeared to be more threatening, but Finchamstead were always up with the run rate. News had filtered through that Thatcham needed just 6 wickets to gain promotion, but with only 4 wickets down and only 5 overs remaining A.HULL (38) and A.JONES (48) had given the visitors more than a sniff of victory, but 2 wickets in an over from Bloor (2-19) ensured the points required for promotion. Finchamstead finished on 202 -7 from 47 overs.
