Match report Sadly another defeat for the 4’s but at least a much-improved performance this weekend as Thatcham lost by 37 runs to an experienced Basingstoke side at Henwick.

Electing to bat on one of the best wickets yet to be seen at Henwick, Basingstoke despite the loss of 2 early wickets, looked to build a sizeable total, with S Rolfe (37) and J Gray (38) in particular punishing any wayward delivery. However the Thatcham bowlers stuck to their task well, with youngsters Jack Andrews (1 for 35) and Peter Donnelly (1 for 26) particularly impressive in their debut.

With the removal of Basingstoke’s hard hitting middle order Thatcham managed to get back in the game and from a threatening 152 for 4 Basingstoke slumped to 171 all out. Gavin Ansell with 2 for 32 and Andy Stephenson with 5 for 23 doing the damage.

In reply Thatcham’s previously fragile batting started with great confidence with Adrian Bromhead (26) and Micky Stone putting on 47 for the first wicket. The good work was continued with gusto by youngsters Adam Philips and Jack Andrews, as they took the total to 95. However, with the departure of Philips for a fine 34 the old failings seemed to set in and wickets fell at regular intervals as Thatcham were bowled out for 134. Jack Andrews adding 24 runs to his earlier fine bowling to complete an excellent TVL debut.
