Match report With the Farnborough runway seemingly in the next field, the several hundred Thatcham 4th XI away support were able to enjoy the added bonus of an full afternoon of display flying, as well as seeing Thatcham have the better of a drawn game with Cove Academy.

With memories of their previous comprehensive 10 wicket win when the two sides met earlier in the season, Cove Academy had no hesitation in putting Thatcham into bat on a damp wicket. However an opening stand of 94 between Paul Sharp (44) and Adrian Bromhead (46), made against the backdrop of screaming jet engines, spectators walking across the pitch, and an Airbus A-380 seemingly hovering over the ground, was a model of concentration. Importantly it took the initiative away from Cove and allowed the Thatcham middle order to build the innings, which they did with great effect with Conor Southgate (27) and Dave Taylor (26) upping the tempo just when required. However Gavin Ansell with a quick-fire 42 made sure the air show spectators kept their wits about them as he peppered the picnic hampers around the boundary edge, to see Thatcham well past the 200 mark. A couple of needless wickets at the end flattered Cove as Thatcham finished on 231 for 8.

For Cove Hampshire youngster M Carter again bowled well but this time without success, the main wicket taker being D Randall who took 4 for 80 from his 18 overs.

In reply Cove openers Lynch and Cagney raced away taking the score to 40 in no time before Ben Cruise made a timely breakthrough when he bowled Cagney for 17. Cruise struck again to remove T Raine and the dangerous Lynch for a hard-hitting 43 as Cove were reduced to 68 for 3. However A Carter and I Raine then rebuilt the innings in a stand of 64 runs, but any hopes of a Cove victory disappeared when Carter was bowled by Stephenson for 41. As a welcome silence settled over the ground and the air show spectators drifted away Cove lost two more wickets before settling for a draw as they finished on 181 for 6.

Ben Cruise with 3 for 34 from 14 overs and Andy Stephenson with 3 for 27 from 9 were the wicket takes but both Adrian Bromhead and Gavin Ansell bowled well and were unlucky not to get among the wickets.
