Match report In a high scoring encounter at Henwick on Saturday Thatcham 4th XI could only manage a draw against a strong Yateley 3rd XI.

On a good batting wicket Yateley lost no time in deciding to bat and openers Cowdrill and Henstock attacked the bowling right from the off as the Thatcham bowlers struggled to find line and length. J Henstock in particular hit out at almost every ball and raced to his 50, before being bowled for 59 with the score on 94. Cowdrill continued to attack the bowling and despite running out his partner Wood for 49, to a fine direct hit at the bowlers end by keeper Jack Young, reached his 100 before retiring shortly afterwards.

A few more lusty blows enabled Yateley to declare on 268 for 3 after only 45 overs, leaving Thatcham to rue dropped chances, and lack of consistency with the ball.

In reply Thatcham top order all got in, but scoring runs at the required rate was difficult against tight bowling. After 30 overs Thatcham had been restricted to 79 for 2. Tom Mahoney and Conor Southgate then upped the scoring rate as the bowlers tired and a 5th wicket partnership of 65 at nine an over between Tom Mahoney and Andy Stephenson briefly gave Thatcham hope of an unlikely victory. However the dismissal of this pair – Mahoney for a fine 67 and Stephenson for 43 saw the end of the run chase as Thatcham finished on 225 for 7, some 40 runs short of the target.

Skipper Andy Davies was as ever the pick of the Yateley bowlers with 3 for 40 from his 17 overs.
