Match report Thatcham II’s finished with a solid draw in their opening league fixture with Chenies & Latimer. The home side were inserted and after a couple of wayward overs soon lost Iain Cottingham to a fine slip catch. Matthew Denness and Chris Brown set about building a platform and took the score on to 52 before Denness went the same way as his opening partner for 26.

Brown, on his Thatcham debut, proved to be the mainstay of the Thatcham batting and he dominated partnerships with Stephen Bird (11) and Stuart Newman (15) but the generosity of the Chenies bowling with 36 extras gave him the most support.

Brown’s golden performance saw him pass fifty before falling to a slighty tired shot and there was a disappointing contribution from the lower middle order and a decent platform went to waste as Thatcham were dismissed for 185. Coetzee (3-49), Norwood (3-40) and Brown (4-69) all bowled well for the visitors.

Young Australian prospect Garth Masters and the evergreen Tim Mahoney both bowled well without luck at the beginning of the Chenies reply until Mahoney made the breakthrough, bowling Bourne for 15. The introduction of John Williams brought the second wicket and it was the start of a fine spell from the left arm spinner.

Norwood (54) set himself to bat through while Wlodaczak looked to be aggressive and they looked set to take Chenies to a comfortable victory until Williams deceived the latter in the flight and soon followed with his third wicket to even the game up.

Norwood then opened up and a flurry of runs took him to fifty but the reintroduction of Masters brought his downfall as he cracked one straight to cover. 37 were needed from five overs with five wickets left but Masters responded well to the challenge with two more wickets in an encouraging debut performance.

With the run rate shooting up to leave 21 required from the last over both sides were left grasping for extra bonus points that didn’t come but Thatcham took the greater share of the pot with 11. Masters and Williams were the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3-41 from 14 and 3-66 from 18 respectively but excellent support was given by Mahoney, 1-31 from 13 and Daniel Stephenson on his 2XI debut.
