Match report Thatcham progressed to the second round of the national Cockspur Cup after a thrilling last over victory at Finchampstead on Sunday.

Electing to bat on a predictably outstanding track, the home side started confidently and despite a fine opening spell from Thatcham debutant Jordan Hobday (2-46), openers Ward (61) and Bloyce (63) soon began to take control.
The introduction of Chris Bird (2 for 31 from 9 overs) finally provided the breakthrough Thatcham so desperately needed but Finchampstead continued to steadily accumulate before a final flurry saw them reach 233-7 from their allotted 45 overs.

Thatcham’s reply started steadily as Hobday (25) and Matt Denness (16) put on 49 for the first wicket but when Daniel Stone fell cheaply soon after, Thatcham found themselves struggling at 61 for 3.
Experienced duo Duncan Johnson and Steve Wyatt set about rebuilding the innings before Johnson was caught hooking the pacey Bloyce for a well constructed 31. Wyatt continued to dominate the bowling but when a direct hit saw him run out for an outstanding 64 Thatcham’s chances looked slimmer than Wyatt’s newly honed physique.
Still requiring 42 runs with only two wickets and seven overs remaining Paul Jenkins and Chris Bird began the final chase and with the aid of Bird’s scampering singles they reached the final over with seven still needed. Showing great maturity and a solid temperament, Jenkins (34 not out) hooked the second ball for four and with a flick through mid-wicket two balls later saw Thatcham through to an outstanding victory and a second round clash with local rivals Falkland.
