Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Beaconsfield on Sat 13 May 2017 at 1pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost By 10 runs
Match report
For those of a nervous disposition, avoiding Thatcham games may prove the sensible choice as for the second week running they fell agonisingly short in another thrilling encounter.
Chasing Beaconsfield's 223, Thatcham stumbled to 47 for 4 with only Kieran Wood making a meaningful top order contribution as the visitor's well balanced bowling attack took a firm control of proceedings. A fighting 40 run partnership between Jack Young (30) and Tom Mahoney (28) gave Thatcham some hope, but when the latter fell to the impressive Harry Stephens (3-32), a further collapse followed and at 131-9 with just 11 overs remaining, a resounding Beaconsfield victory seemed inevitable.
With little option but to throw caution to the wind, the final pair of John Williams and Chris Bird went on the offensive and Williams wasted no time in taking the game to the Beaconsfield attack, bludgeoning the hapless Holloway for 37 in 2 destructive overs. Bird was more than happy to play the supporting role as Williams dominated and as the runs continued to flow, Beaconsfield's confidence began to waver.
As the fireworks continued Williams reached 50, taking just 24 balls to do so, and with Bird adding valuable runs at the other end it was now a case of who could hold their nerve as Thatcham manoeuvred themselves into a winning position.
With 12 balls left and just 14 runs now required, Beaconsfield turned to seamer Thomas who responded in style, bowling a superb penultimate over. The change of pace proved too good for Bird (18*) who failed to connect with a series of slower balls and with only 2 scrambled runs conceded, Beaconsfield once again had the upper hand.
Williams now needed to summon one last effort, but Beaconsfield's Hamish Smart (3-27) had the final say with another slower ball taking Williams' middle stump and ending Thatcham's hopes of what would have been the most remarkable of victories. Williams finished with an outstanding 61 but it was ultimately in vain as Beaconsfield celebrated.
It was a tough result to take for Thatcham but they were made to pay for an indisciplined bowling display earlier in the day. With Ryan Gilmour suffering a side strain in the pre-match warm up, Thatcham were forced to call on Kieran Wood and he didn't disappoint, conceding just 22 runs from an excellent 7 over spell. But elsewhere the Thatcham attack struggled to find consistency, conceding 48 extras and failing to take early wickets. The obdurate Nilesh Odedra (67) was the mainstay of the Beaconsfield innings but it was quick late runs from David Heavyside (23) and Ed Barnett (45*) that ultimately took the total beyond Thatcham's reach.
Despite a second successive defeat, Thatcham can take some consolation from a fighting display, but will need to improve with both bat and ball if they are to end their losing streak at newly promoted Sonning next week.
