Match report An impressive 1st XI debut from 14-year old Rhodri Lewis was the highlight of the day as Thatcham recorded their second win of the season with a nervy 17 run victory over Yateley.

Missing several regulars, Thatcham stuttered to 58 for 4 with only Steve Bird (21) making any telling early contribution. A welcome 40-run 5th wicket partnership between Tom Mahoney (19) and Lewis (16) helped stabilise the innings with Lewis showing an impressive maturity to match his undoubted ability. When both fell in quick succession, Thatcham needed their lower order to fire and they didn't disappoint with Jamie Young (23) and the increasingly reliable John Williams (39) adding valuable late runs. Stuart Lipo (3-37) was the pick of the Yateley attack and it was he who fittingly wrapped things up as Thatcham failed to bat out their 50 overs, finishing on 191.

The Yateley response started brightly with the aggressive Jacques Pienaar (23) punishing a wayward Thatcham attack. Pienaar's dismissal did little to slow things down as Yateley continued to dominate and at 80-2 from just 13 overs, the visitors were in a commanding position.

Needing to stem the flow, Thatcham skipper Josh O'Flynn turned to veteran Tim Mahoney and the experienced seamer rolled back the years to peg back the Yateley onslaught. With John Williams (1-18 from 9) applying pressure from the other end, Yateley began to crack and when Mahoney (2-28) accounted for key man Harry Maxwell (40), Thatcham seized control.

A middle order collapse followed, with Lewis (2-22) marking a memorable day by trapping Chris Petts leg before with his very first ball in 1st XI cricket. At 127-7 Yateley looked dead and buried but having scored so quickly in the early overs, they had time on their side as Lipo and skipper Alex Muir began to wrestle back the initiative.

With Muir playing the supporting role, Lipo began to open up and by the time Chris Bird enticed Muir into holing out to O'Flynn, the pair had added 40 valuable runs and moved within just 25 runs of victory.

It was now down to Lipo to see Yateley home, but Bird was to have the final say, bowling him round his legs for a hard fought 42. Last pair Gerhard Pienaar and John Howells briefly delayed the inevitable, but Bird (3-31) wrapped things up with brother Stephen holding on to a steepling Pienaar drive and sealing a 17-run victory.
