Burnham 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 1pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report Thatcham's recent winning streak came to an end with an under par performance resulting in a disappointing 50-run defeat at Burnham on Saturday.

Depleted through both injury and absence, a much changed Thatcham bowled first on a flat Burnham wicket and the home side were quick to take advantage, racing to 50 without loss inside 7 overs to establish a dominant early position. Despite the onslaught, 1st XI debutant Alex Wood bowled with confidence and was rewarded for his efforts as first Shahzad Baig (16) and then Normi Nadeem (36) were accounted for in quick succession.

The introduction of Tim Mahoney (0-31 from 10) further reined back the Burnham run fest but Thatcham lacked penetration and with wickets in hand Adnam Shabber and Tauseef Kazmi began to once again up the run rate.

As the two powered on, Thatcham began to wilt. Shabber was particularly destructive, racing to a hard hitting 126 and with Kazmi (68) adding ample support, Burnham passed 300. It was a tough day in the field for Thatcham, with an under par fielding performance failing to support a hard working, but ultimately toothless attack. Only Wood (3-59) and Mahoney came away unscathed, and with 100 coming in the last 10 overs, the Burnham innings closed on a formidable 314.

In reply, Thatcham openers Steve Bartholomew and Rhys Williams started positively, but with scoreboard pressure adding to some tight Burnham bowling, Bartholomew (35) was first to fall. Jamie Young (16) and Tom Mahoney (21) briefly got going, but as the run rate rose, Thatcham slumped to 107 for 6.

With any realistic hope of victory long gone, Thatcham settled for damage limitation and it was Wood once again who shone, guiding the tail past 200 to ensure maximum batting points. Supported ably by both Chris Bird (37) and Tim Mahoney, Wood capped a memorable debut with an outstanding innings of maturity and skill that belied his inexperience. Adding 115 for the last two wickets, Thatcham closed on 264-9, with Wood unbeaten on a fine 78.

Despite the defeat Thatcham will take heart from Wood's debut appearance but know that improvement in both performance and availability are needed as they revert to the traditional 52/48-over format against early pace setters Royal Ascot next week.
