Match report A fine half century from teenager Rhodri Lewis saw Thatcham home as they picked up their third win of the season against league leaders Royal Ascot on Saturday.
Having been asked to field after losing yet another toss, Thatcham got off to the perfect start with Alex Wood (3-50) trapping James Wensley in front in the very first over.
In partnership with skipper Josh O'Flynn (2-30), the pair ripped through the Ascot top order as they crumbled to 64-4 against an opening spell of control and skill. The introduction of spin further strengthened Thatcham's position and at 98-8, Ascot were in danger of suffering a morale sapping thrashing.
Whilst Thatcham were no doubt in the ascendancy, Ascot's experienced ex-skipper Nick Sweetman was still at the crease and despite the carnage around him, he continued to plug away. He finally found support in Andrew Murray (23) and with a little help from the tail saw his side through with a fine 79 not out as Thatcham wrapped things up in the final over. Chris Bird (4-34) led the way for the home side as the innings closed on 169.
Having seen the wicket turn, Ascot naturally took the old ball and Oliver Dunnett (3-43) soon had Thatcham in trouble. Steve Bartholomew (24) batted with confidence but when he and Jamie Young fell in quick succession, Thatcham were reeling at 64 for 5.
Desperately needing a calm head to take control of the situation, Thatcham found the answer in the unlikely figure of 14-year old Lewis who alongside vice captain Tom Mahoney (27) began to rebuild. The pair added 60 to settle Thatcham nerves with Lewis the dominant partner in what proved to be a match winning partnership.
Lewis finally departed for a stand out 54 and despite a few anxious moments, Thatcham reached their target with 3 wickets to spare as Ben Copeman's invaluable 25 not out saw the home side through to a well deserved victory.
