Match report A battling rear guard action from Thatcham's experienced tail salvaged a draw as they frustrated league leaders Slough II in an entertaining Brownsfield encounter.
With both sides boasting a glut of spin options, the toss was always going to prove crucial and it was no surprise when Slough skipper Faisal Noor elected to bat first on a dry wicket that looked certain to turn as the game progressed.
The early exchanges went Slough's way as both Geyhas Khan (29) and Yaqoot Rafiq (33) punished anything loose and it wasn't until Des Hartley Russell (2-21) despatched both in quick succession that Thatcham began to force their way back into the game.
Despite the setback, Slough continued on the front foot as Mohammed Awais (58) and Raheem Akhtar (30) moved the visitors into a commanding position. Needing a breakthrough, Thatcham introduced Rhodri Lewis (3-27) and with Josh O'Flynn (2-16) also picking up late wickets, the Slough innings stuttered to 225 all out, a competitive total but someway short of the 250 plus they’d threatened in the early stages.
As expected, Slough opened with spin and the experienced duo of Naveed Akhtar and Syed Waqar Ali Shah made life incredibly tough for the Thatcham top order. Skipper Josh O’Flynn was first to go, failing to read a Shah googly, but battling innings' from Peter Spriggs (17) and Jack Andrews (21) rebuilt to take Thatcham past 50. As both looked to up the run rate, Shah (6-93) struck, and he continued to rip through the middle order as Thatcham collapsed from 51-1 to 113-8.
With plenty of overs to spare only one result looked possible and despite Stephen Bird’s (25) late flurry, there was little to suggest that anything other than a resounding Slough victory was on the cards.
But final pair Nick Bishop (26*) and Chris Bird (25*) dug in and as the overs passed, a once unlikely draw became a distinct possibility. Both batted with composure as they took the score past 150 and despite a couple of scares looked relatively comfortable as Slough shuffled the pack in an attempt to force the victory.
Despite Slough’s efforts, the pair hung on, adding 45 valuable runs as the innings closed on 175. It was tough on the visitors who dominated for much of the game but a morale boosting result for Thatcham who showed great spirit and commitment to salvage a hard fought draw.
