Match report Thatcham’s inconsistent batting failed to fire as they fell to a comprehensive 109 run defeat to Aldershot on Saturday.
Having lost yet another toss – the ninth in 10 games – Thatcham were asked to bowl as Aldershot looked to take advantage of a fine batting surface and lightning outfield, and it was testament to just how good conditions were that despite fine opening spells from Will Wright and Alex Wood the visitors raced to 50 without loss.
Wood (1-32) finally found the breakthrough, trapping Callum Grover leg before, and when veteran Tim Mahoney (2-56) claimed two scalps in his first over, Thatcham began to wrestle back control.
Skipper Josh O’Flynn (2-33) added another wicket soon after and with Aldershot precariously poised at 74-4, Thatcham looked to turn the screw.
But whilst wickets fell around him, opener Rory Collins remained steadfast and with the support of Mike Lloyd, they looked to get things back on track. It proved a pivotal partnership as Thatcham wilted in the heat and the pair added 99 inside 16 overs to dramatically shift proceedings back in Aldershot’s favour.
Collins finally fell for a superb 120, with Lloyd making an unbeaten 91 as Aldershot declared on a formidable 279. Wright (3-79) was the pick of the Thatcham attack but with other options limited, Thatcham failed to find the support his efforts deserved.
In reply, Thatcham started positively, with O’Flynn (42) continuing his fine form and despite the early loss of Ben Copeman, the home side dominated the early exchanges. O’Flynn and Jack Andrews (36) saw their side reach 80 inside 12 overs, but when the pair fell in consecutive overs, the Thatcham innings fell apart.
Only Jack Young (42) showed any fight as Thatcham lasted just 35 overs, slumping to 170 all out as the middle order failed to offer any resistance. The loss sees Thatcham drop to 7th in the league and they know some much needed batting consistency is required if they’re to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle in the coming weeks.
