Match report Thatcham’s unbeaten run has come to an end after they were beaten by four wickets at home to Wargrave.
After winning the toss Thatcham’s skipper elected to bat on another hot Saturday afternoon. Openers Peter Spriggs and Rhys Williams negotiated a tricky first ten overs with their wickets still intact and the score at 20-0. However the persistence of Clark soon paid off as he got the wickets of first Williams (8) caught slip and then Spriggs (11) bowled in consecutive overs. Jack Young (2) was next to come and go with the score having just reached 30. It was then up to Jamie Young and Rhodri Lewis to rebuild the innings as the pair played with patience and punished anything loose. Thatcham looked back on track until Lewis was caught in the deep off Robinson for 27. Skipper Mahoney joined Young in the middle, with the latter soon passing a well-made 50, before chipping a caught and bowled chance for Robinson’s second wicket. A Thatcham collapsed soon followed as Robinson continued to take wickets. Next to go was Prince (3) and then Wood (5). Nick Bishop (0) and Chris Bird (7) were next to go leaving Mahoney and Green to finish off the innings. Mahoney continued to play in his usual busy fashion as he and Green looked to get Thatcham to a competitive total. Mahoney was finally out with two overs to go making a fine 40 with the innings closing on 176. Green the man not out on 12.
Wargrave looked to reply in an aggressive fashion, however Rhodri Lewis took the two early wickets of the dangerous Sohi (9) caught and bowled and then Hanif (18) stumped by Young. Bishop then had Codwell caught by Young for two and Thatcham sensed an opening. However Malik (56) and Robinson (36) produced what proved to be a match winning partnership. It wasn’t until the reintroduction of Lewis did Thatcham make the breakthrough of Malik caught by Williams. Chris Bird then trapped Robinson LBW for 36 and bowled Ormrod (4) soon after. That was the final wicket for Thatcham as Graham’s quick fire 46* saw Wargrave to victory.
Next week Thatcham Travel to Aldershot looking to bounce back from defeat straight away.
