Match report Thatcham Town CC 1st XI completed a successful run chase in the August sun at Brownsfield on Saturday

Losing the toss, Thatcham Town CC were input into bat by the opposition on a pitch that was expected to offer plenty of assistance to the spinners later in the day. Ryan Gilmour (0-33) back for his first game of the season seemed like he had never been away and bowled a consistent probing line outside off stump and was unlucky to not pick up any rewards. With openers Grinstead and Doyle appearing to be set, it took the introduction of Chris Bird to get the much needed breakthrough in the 16th over when Doyle (23) edged behind for keeper Jamie Young to take a sharp catch. In came Hollely and he was not long after to follow Doyle back to the pavilion when the fiery pace of Nick Bishop led the batsman to tread on his stumps, out hit wicket for 15 and the score 106 – 2 in the 21st over.

Brad Passfield and Grinstead then continued to up the ante before Passfield was bowled by Rhys Lewis (1-37). It took the introduction of Ben Denton-Powell to get the key wicket of Grinstead (78) with a cleverly disguised slower ball with the Bagshot score now 163-4 with ten overs to go.

Thatcham spinners then took hold of the last part of the innings with some tight and rewarding bowling. Chris Bird (2-28), Usman Ijaz (3-42) and Nick Bishop (1-24) continued to pick up wickets and never let the Bagshot batsman accelerate. Only Collier (35) was able to make a meaningful contribution in the latter part of the innings for his team and it was Thatcham who had wrestled back the momentum. At 222-8 off of their 40 overs, Bagshot’s total was still going to be a very challenging one for Thatcham however.

Thatcham’s run chase got off to a great start with Lewis and Ijaz finding the boundary at regular intervals. With both batsman looking settled, it somewhat came as a surprise when first Ijaz (24) and then Lewis (15) departed in consecutive overs. Thatcham now needed a solid partnership to get them back on track and incoming batsman Jack Young and Rhys Williams duly obliged.

Jack Young quickly settled and along with Williams, rotated the strike before quickly pouncing on any loose deliveries from the opposition bowling attack. Bagshot had by now introduced their spinners and it was the great footwork of Young that never allowed the bowlers to find their line and length. It took a momentary lapse in concentration from Williams that saw his downfall for 26 to the spin of Atkinson (1-39). In came Gregor Wells (15) who played some impressive strokes before losing his wicket, caught on the boundary with Thatcham now on 133-4 and requiring 90 off of the last 18 overs.

Jamie Young now joined his namesake at the crease in what would be the crucial partnership of the game. Jamie looked to ably support the incumbent batsman and worked the ball into gaps in the fields to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Jack Young continued to confidently take the attack to the bowling team and moved past a fine 50. With the spin of Balcombe (1-39) having finished his allotted overs, it was down to Bartlett and Fletcher to try and stem the flow of runs. However, this was to no avail as the Young brothers continued to work the ball around the field and also found the boundary at regular intervals. The winning runs came with three overs to spare when Jamie Young threaded it through the field and Thatcham had won by 6 wickets. The Thatcham innings was underpinned by a faultless 88 not out from skipper Jack Young, with Jamie Young also unbeaten on 24 at the end.

Next week sees Thatcham travel away to Wokingham in what is expected to see a close encounter with only two points currently separating the two teams in the league table
