Match report Thatcham Town were back to winning ways as they got the better of Finchampstead on a gloomy Saturday at Brownsfield.

Having won the toss, the visitors chose to bowl. Their decision looked a good one as Williams was out for a duck as he was well caught at gully off the bowling of Howarth (1-19). Skipper Jack Young come to the crease and he and opener Spriggs looked to build the Thatcham innings by being busy between the wickets. They saw off the opening spell of Stewart (0-19) and Howarth with the only real scare being when Young was hit in the helmet by Stewart with the ball making a ding off of the helmet. The pair pounced on anything loose and put on 73 in good time before the spin of Ellis removed Spriggs as he was caught by Eldridge for 19. Ellis then struck again as he had new bat Jamie Young for 2, leaving the score on 81-3 after 20 overs. It was then up to Lewis to build a partnership with the captain Young. The pair looked to run hard and put away the bad balls as Young moved onto 67 and the partnership grew to 53. Lazenby then struck after a poor start with the ball as he managed to get the wicket of Young as he was bowled after the ball deflected off the bat and both heels of Young. Lewis followed shortly after as he was caught off the bowling of Patel and the innings was in the balance at 134-5 with 11 overs still to go. Ijaz and Wells then combined brilliantly as they put on 40 in quick time. The big hitting of Ijaz combined with the stroke play of Wells brought the score up to 174 before Patel got the wicket of Wells for 14. Gilmour game and went as he holed out trying to score some quick runs. Denton-Powell joined Ijaz in the middle and the pair guided Thatcham up to a score of 205-8 off their 40 overs, with Ijaz unbeaten on 39 and Denton-Powell on 11. Thatcham were very happy with this score on a wicket which offered plenty to the bowling side.

The visitors reply started slowly as pace-men Gilmour and Jofra Denton-Powell bowled in good areas at impressive pace. Gilmour then took Thacham’s first wicket as he had Crerer trapped LBW for 6 and Finchampstead were 22-1. Eldridge, having seen off the new ball burst, decided to attack the spinners but it wasn’t long before he was stumped off the bowling of Bird for 29. This was the start of a great 2 overs for the hosts as 3 more wickets fell. Lewis has McMurray caught by Young, whilst bird had Oliver caught by Ijaz and then had Eaglesham LBW. That made the score 49-5 and Thatcham in complete control. Lazenby has other ideas however as he looked to go on the counter attack. He smashed his way to a quick fire 50 with a little help from the fielders as he was dropped twice by Donald Trump at long on. The introduction of Bishop into the attack saw the end of Reed as he was bowled for 11. But Thatcham has to wait until the score was on 146 before the dangerman Lazenby was finally caught by Young for 56. Ijaz then picked up Ellis (15) soon after. Bird took his 4th wicket of the match as he had Patel stumped for 12 and should of had his 5th but for a dropped catch. Bishop finished the innings with Howarth LBW for 14. An impressive showing with the ball for Thatcham saw Bird return figures of 4-33, Bishop 2-41 and Ijaz 2-18.

Thatcham will go looking for back to back wins next Saturday as they travel to Binfield.
