Match report Thatcham suffered a 5 wicket defeat at home to Hurst this weekend as there batting failed to fire.

Having won the toss thatcham chose to bat and openers Lewis and Denton-Powell struggled to score off the tight opening spell of the Hurst bowlers. Lewis then looked like he had settled but then chipped one to mid on. Young joined Denton-Powell and looked to push the score along, before the Hursts opener picked up his second of the game as Denton-Powell fell in the same fashion to Lewis. Wells and Young continued to build the momentum and looked to hit the boundary. The score was 60-2 and the game in the balance. However it all unravelled very quickly for Thatcham as within 10 mad overs they collapsed to 80-9. Lewis the main threat as he took 4-15. Jamie Young provided the only resistance for the home side as his 29 and a last wicket partnership of 33 with the classy Mike Green saw Thatcham to 103 all out. An incredibly frustrating batting display as Thatcham were bowled out well within their allotted overs.

With a bowling attack as talented as Thatcham’s, Young still believed and so did his team. Gilmour, opening the bowling, terrorised the Hurst top order as he took 2-24 off his 8 overs. On another day he could of had 6 or 7, in one of his best spells for the club. The willey spin duo of Bird and Bishop also looked to drag Thatcham in the game, both taking a wicket. With a run out from Gregor Wells added into the mix, Hurst were 50-5, the game was in the balance. However, Thatcham were not able to get another breakthrough as balls seemed to evade fielders by the barest of margins. Hurst eventually reached the total after 28 overs.

A disappointing result but great fight from the lads. Thatcham travel to Fleet this weekend in the penultimate league fixture.
