Fleet v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 05 Sep 2020 at 12:30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won
Match report
5-star Gilmour led Thatcham to a comfortable victory away to Fleet on Saturday.
Fleet won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch that offered plenty to the bowlers. Thatcham started slowly with the ball as the first 3 overs yielded 20 runs. However, the class of Gilmour shone through as he ran through the Fleet top order. First was Comfort bowled for 4 with Bunter (4) also having the same fate. Then the big wicket of Bywaters fell as he edge to Young in the gully for 1. Gilmour continues to wreck havoc as he then had Patel (1) bowled and Freeman LBW the next ball for 0. Muir survived the hatrick ball but Gilmour already had 5 wickets for just 34 runs. A top class spell from a cricketer who can cause any line up trouble and was supported well by the accurate spell of 17 year old McKay (0-13) at the other end. At 60-5, Thatcham’s spinners were able to control the game. It didn’t take Bird long to remove the only resistance shown by Fleet, Gurney, for 42. And then Bishop had Muir caught and bowled for 4, leaving the score 71-7. Fleet’s lower order provides some lusty blows and frustrated the visitors somewhat. But when bird got Cairns caught by cooper for 10 and the introduction of Lewis had Lysaght (21) caught by Wells Fleet were 9 down and in all sorts of trouble. Bishop finished the innings off having Chillery (21) caught by Lewis and Fleet were 124 all out inside 29 overs. Gilmour was the pick of the bowlers with 5-34 but the spin duo of Bird and Bishop returned figures of. 2-22 and 2-22 respectively.
Thatcham’s reply to the modest total started poorly, as they found themselves 5-2 after just 8 balls. Spriggs looking to be aggressive was caught 2nd ball for 0 and Young our for 5, edging behind off the bowling of Comfort. It was down to debutant Cooper and 15 year old Lewis to consolidate for the visitors, and that they did. The pair showed maturity beyond their experience and years as they blunted the Fleet attack whilst punishing anything loose. The score was on 27 when Muir has cooper bowled with one that nipped back and took his off stump for 10. Gilmour walked to the crease and just like he did with his bowling, he took the game to fleet in a match winning partnership with Lewis. Gilmour smashed a quick 30 including two big sixes to take a chunk out of the hosts score. Lewis supporting him beautifully as he worked the ball in to gaps. When Gilmour fell for 30, Jamie Young (7) soon went and Wells after a promising start hit wicket for 10. It was left to Denton-Powell (1*) and Lewis (45*) to see thatcham home with 14 overs to spare.
Thatcham’s last game of the season is away at Kidmore End, where they’ll be looking to put in another good performance and finish the season on a high.
