Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Thatcham 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jul 2020 at 11:30am
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Exactly three months on from when the cricket season was meant to start, cricket finally returned to Brownsfield on Saturday, with an interclub fixture between Jack Young’s XI and Paul Hemming’s XI.
Having won the toss, Young elected to bat first and opened up himself with the young and talented Rhys Lewis. The pair got through a tricky opening spell as Green and McKay threatened with the ball without picking up any rewards. The opening pair put on 64 before Bird struck as Lewis departed for 28 caught brilliantly by Odhinn Moore. Young was then joined by new recruit Usman Ijaz who looked to attack the bowling early on. Young (29) then retired at drinks so another new recruit, Jamie Elliot, joined Ijaz in the middle. Elliot’s debut with the bat was short lived however as he lost his balance to a leg side delivery and was impressively stumped by keeper Davidson-Soler, off the bowling of Moore, and Elliot had to depart for 1. Gregor Wells strolled to the crease and in typical fashion timed the ball beautifully from the start. Wells and Ijaz combined beautifully as they put on 82 and they were looking to set up a big finish to the innings. Skipper Hemming had something to say about that though as the experienced campaigner bowled Wells for 33 with the score at 164-3. A couple of overs later and Hemming struck again by first having Jamie Young (2) caught and bowled and then had Wylie (0) caught first ball. Hemming was agonisingly close to a hatrick as Wood (6*) played and missed the hatrick delivery. There would be no more wickets to fall in the innings although tight bowling at the end restricted Jack Young’s XI to a competitive 196-5, with Hemming the pick of the bowlers returning figures of 3-22. Other noticeable contributions with the ball included Bird (1-22), Thorne (0-27) and Moore (1-18). A great knock on debut saw Ijaz top score the innings on 62*.
After an unusual tea break where the players brought their own food, due to one of the many new Covid-19 guidelines, it was time for the Paul Hemming XI openers to bat. The inexperienced pair of Denton-Powell and Davidson-Soler batted beautifully as they saw off the opening burst of Wood and Simpson. Davidson-Soler worked the ball around nicely whilst Denton-Powell looked to be aggressive and hit the ball cleanly as the pair approached drinks. The score was on 73 when the impressive Cox found his length and drew the edge of Davidson-Soler who had to depart for a well-made 41 as Jamie Young made no mistake with the catch behind the stumps. Cox then struck again the very next ball as Rochfort went back to a good length ball and had his off stump ripped out and the game swung back in the balance. The spin twins of Ijaz (0-33) and Lewis (0-40) then came on and looked to dry up the runs. The plan worked as Mahoney left Denton-Powell stranded in the middle of the wicket and he was run out for 47 with the score on 98. Hemming (33*) strolled to the crease and his experience provided vital in the run chase as he quickly got into his stride and worked the ball around nicely. Further wickets could have fallen as 3 catches went down, which ended up proving costly. Hemming combined with Mahoney (57*), punished the fielding side as they went on to see the game home with just 2 balls to spare and with 7 wickets in hand. Cox was the pick of the bowlers retuning figures of 2-25 and was supported by Simpson (0-23).
Overall this was a great run out for all the players who now head into the league season after playing a competitive game. The first XI are at Brownsfield again next Saturday as they open they’re league campaign against Reading, whilst the second XI travel to North Maidenhead.
Lastly, but by no means least, a massive thank you must go out to all the people behind the scenes at the club who made the game possible to play.
