Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Wokingham 2 on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 92 runs
Match report
Thatcham made it back to back wins on Saturday as they beat Wokingham 2’s by 92 runs at Brownsfield.
After winning the toss Young had no hesitation in choosing to bat first on a glorious Saturday afternoon. The usual pair of O’Flynn and Williams opened up for the hosts as Thatcham wanted to grind down their visitors. It wasn’t to be however, as O’flynn (4) was caught, strangled down the legside off the impressive Singh. Young was in at number 3 for Thatcham and struggled to time the ball early on. Williams at the other end made things look easy as he punished the Wokingham attack. Williams looked like he was on his way to a big score before he picked out the one man on the boundary of the bowling of Pogson. Spriggs, fresh from his fine knock last weekend, joined Young at the crease with the score on 97-2. The pair looked to work the ball in to the gaps and wear the fielding side down. Young still not at his fluent best passed 50 with a drive down the ground. The pair looked to then up to the tempo as the visitors began to tire. Spriggs then followed Young to 50 as the partnership grew past 100. The Wokingham captain, roated his bowlers regularly in search for a breakthrough, but Young and Spriggs kept piling on the runs. With 10 overs to go Young pulled on behind square for four to bring up his maiden 100 for Thatcham. He finally fell for 124 as he was bowled in the search for further quick runs in the 46th over, ending a 171 partnership between the pair. In came Gilmour as he looked to produce his heroics from last weekend as he blasted a quick fire 28*, including a couple of towering sixes. Thatcham ended their innings on 315-3 with Spriggs the anchor, ending on a very well made 77*.
Thatcham went in search of early wickets as Gilmour and Mackay charged in for the hosts. Gilmour desperately unlucky early on as edges fell just wide or short of fielders and a bizarre moment where after bowling the Wokingham opener, the bails didn’t fall off. Mackay made the breakthrough as he had the Wokingham opener caught by Moore at mid-on. A 74 run partnership for the 2nd wicket halted Thatcham’s progress before Bird had Barson (32) caught by Young. Bishop, returning to the side after a holiday, soon got in on the wickets as he had Rintoul (48) caught and bowled. Thatcham then squeezed the Wokingham innings as the runs dried up and the wickets began to fall. An impressive 10 over spell from O’Flynn of 2-39 the pick of the bowlers. He was well backed up by Bishop (2-31) and Bird (3-42), as the Wokingham innings ended on 223-9 after their 50 overs.
Thatcham will look to make it three wins on the bounce and climb further up the table as they head to Finchampstead next weekend.
