Match report Thatcham fell 10 runs short of making it three wins on the bounce on Saturday as mistakes in the field cost them at Finchampstead.

Fielding first on a hot day Thatcham knew it would be hard work and they’d have to start well. As ever, Gilmour did just that with the ball as he found the edge of Reed (0) in the first over, the perfect start. Ex Thatcham player Ijaz was in next for Finch, who was looking to prove a point against his old side. However, just like in training multiple times last season, Green had his number and had Ijaz LBW for just 7. At 20-2 Thatcham wanted to hammer home the early advantage but mistakes in the field began to creep in. King (22) was dropped twice before Thatcham’s gun fielder Bird took a stunning diving catch to give Gilmour his second wicket. After his fielding heroics, Bird then got straight to work with the ball as he had Oliver (0) removed from just his second ball. With the score on 40-4, Finch looked to counter attack to drag themselves back in the game. Khanti (47) and Appaih (35) moved the score along nicely combining some good stroke play with some indifferent Thatcham fielding. It was the introduction of Bishop who found the breakthrough for the visitors as he had Appaih caught behind by Young. With Thatcham starting to struggle in the heat, it was youngster Moore who gained control back for Thatcham as he took the wicket of Khanti for 47 in a fantastic 7 over spell of 1-17. 135-6 the score and Thatcham were back in control. However, Woodward and Jenkins coming in at 7 and 8 for the visitors played superbly well as they played with responsibly. After more chances come and went, Young managed to have Woodward stumped off Bishop. The returning Gilmour took Thatcham’s last wicket as he had Lazenbury caught by Young, as he finished with figures of 3-60 off 15 overs. Finchampstead finishing on 209-8 from their 52 overs.



Thatcham’s reply got off to the worst possible start as Kite removed O’Flynn for 0 in the first over. Williams and Young looked to rebuild as they took advantage of the attacking fields set by Finch. Williams looked in magnificent touch as he and Young (19) put on 40 before the latter to edged a pull shot on to this helmet and the ball looped to gully. Wells (7) and Young (9) struggled to get in on what was now turning out to be a surprisingly tricky pitch to bat on as Thatcham began to stumble. Mahoney joined Williams at the crease and the pair looked to rebuild and be busy at the crease. Mahoney timing the ball magnificently from the get go. He proved to be the perfect foil for Williams, who passed 50 with a trademark drive down the ground. The return of Jenkins into the attack got the needed breakthrough for the visitors as Williams was bowled for 61. Gilmour looked like he was continuing his fine form with the bat before a controversial LBW decision meant he had to go for 18. Moore (3) was next to go for Thatcham as he was hit on the pad advancing down the wicket off the bowling of Lazenbury. Bishop (6) and Bird (12) provided great support for Mahoney as Thatcham showed they bat deep and would not roll over. The score on 200-8 with 5 overs to go and Thacham needing just 8 runs, Finch returned to their strike bowler in Jenkins. He took the 2 wickets required for Finch in the over as first Bird and then Green was bowled, leaving Mahoney stranded on 55* at the other end of Thatcham desperately just 10 runs short of their target.

A hard one to take for Young and his Thatcham side who felt they played the better cricket on the day but mistakes in the field come back to cost them. They look to put that right as they host Fleet at Brownsfield on Saturday.
