Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Fleet on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs
Match report
Thatcham suffered defeat at home to Fleet as they crumbled to 138 all out on Saturday.
Fleet won the toss and elected to bat on a dark and grey afternoon at Brownsfield. Odhinn Moore took the new ball for Thatcham, bowling a fine opening spell of 7 overs 2-8. He first had Gurney caught by Chris Bird in the gully and then Leavold caught by Bishop at second slip. Bishop at the other end didn’t take long to get in on the act either as he has Cairns caught by Bird, leaving the score on 8-3 after 10 overs. English and Comfort dug in for the visitors through a tricky spell. Mackay backed up Moore’s fine spell and was unlucky not to get any wickets in a 7 over spell which yielded just 10 runs. However, the Fleet pair battled hard and put on 103 runs in a frustrating stand for Thatcham. The returning Bishop got the breakthrough as he had Comfort caught and bowled for a fine 56. O’flynn then had English caught the very next ball as his short ball hurried the Fleet captain who top edged to Bishop at fine leg. With the overs ticking by, Fleet tried to up the run rate. Lysaght hit a quick 20 before being stumped by Young off Bird. Bishop then took two further wickets as he had Chillery and Patel caught in the deep by Young. Muir was the 9th and final wicket to go in the last over, stumped off the bowling of Bird for 24. A good fightback from the visitors who managed to creep up to 164-9 off their 52 overs. Some fine bowling from a youthful Thatcham attack with Bishop returning 4-42, Moore 2-36 and Bird 2-39.
Thatcham’s response started poorly as they found themselves 13-2 after they lost openers O’Flynn and Williams. Things got worse when the ever consistent Spriggs was run out, leaving the hosts on 36-3. The Young brother’s looked to recover, just as Fleet had done earlier in the day, knowing that things would get easier the longer they hung in there. After a tough start Jack Young went on the counter attack and looked to take on the Fleet attack. He soon passed 50 as the score moved onto 88 and Thatcham looked back in control of the game. Jamie Young was playing the support role perfectly as he battled hard and rotating the strike regularly, before he was bowled as Lysaght got one to jag back late and take his off stump. Mahoney, fresh from a fine knock last weekend was in next and looked in great touch as he dispatched just his third ball to the point boundary for four. Despite the wicket, Thatcham were in control at 110-4 and felt that another 15 runs without losing a wicket would break the visitors spirits. It wasn’t to be the case though as Chillery got the wicket of Young as he edged behind for 65. Thatcham were never able to get going again and lost a further 5 wickets for just 28 runs, leaving them all out for 138, 26 runs shy of Fleet’s target of 164.
A real disappointing afternoon for Thatcham, who played some good cricket but weren’t able to win the big moments in a game they should have won. They will look to bounce back next week as they travel to Kidmore End.
