Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Basingstoke 2nds on Sat 15 May 2004 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by nine wickets
Match report
Thatcham showed their title potential as they crushed Basingstoke 2's at Brownsfield by 9 wickets on Saturday.
Basingstoke skipper Keith Harsham won the toss and elected to bat and it didn't take long for strike bowler James Theunissen to make the first inroads of the afternoon as he bowled Vinn with a snorter for 6. Nick Bishop then got in on the ac, dissmissing James for 5 courtesy of a fine catch from keeper Nik Stewart. Chandler and Dummer then added the best partnership of the innings for Basingstoke, taking the score up to 44 before Dummer was run out by a combination of a suicidal call from his partner and a fantastic piece of fielding by Rakesh Patel, swooping in from square leg and throwing down the stumps leaving Dummer a good 2 yards short of safety. Peter Edgcombe replaced Theunissen and in his 2nd over bowled Chandler for a cavalier 15 to leave the visitors in all sorts of trouble at 46-4 through the opening 15 overs. Chris Bird replaced Bishop and he took care of Rouse for 21, Steve Wyatt pulling off an amazing catch at slip, diving to his right to cling on to a difficult chance and Thatcham were well and truely on top. Sensing the opposition weakening, Theunissen was re-introduced for a burst down the hill with immediate reward, as he got rid of the stubborn Harsham for 12. Parfitt and Bowen both came and went without troubling the scorers, Chris Bird the successful bowler in both cases and the experienced Nigel Williamson was all that remained for Basingstoke as he tried to battle through the overs to give his side something to defend. Peter Edgcombe soon out paid to that though as he bowled Williamson for 13 and then dissimissed Darmody, LBW for 0 and Thatcham had wrapped up the visitors innings all out for 104 in just 37 overs.
It was an excellent all round display by the home side in the field, all the bowlers taking the credit and sharing the wickets around, Edgcombe the pick with 3-11 from 8 overs ably backed up by Chris Bird, 3-31 from 9 overs, James Theunissen 2-28 from 11 and Nick Bishop 1-24 from 8.
With nothing to defend and Thatcham's powerful batting line up in wait, Harsham opened up with 2 spinners and Sri Lankan Bradman Ediriweera ripped them to shreds, puncturing the ropes with ease as 47 runs were posted off the initial 5 overs without loss and the game was up for Basingstoke. The seamers were introduced, Bowen and Holland doing a much better job for their side, but Ediriweera was relentless and with Jim Ettridge at the other end in his usual imperious form, the home side were coasting to victory in quick time. Ediriweera reached his maiden fifty for the club off just 42 balls and the only downer of the day was Ettridge's dismissal for 21 with just 5 runs needed for victory. Steve Wyatt joined Ediriweera and safely negotiated the victory fro just 14.5 overs as an early finish and a twenty point haul was the end result.
