Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Amersham on Sat 19 Jun 2004 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Thatcham’s opening bowlers James Theunissen and Bradman Ediriweera produced a stunning display as visitors Amersham were blown away inside 20 overs at Brownsfield on Saturday to give their side 20 points and move the promotion hopefuls up to second place in Thames Valley 1, 21 points behind leaders North Maidenhead.
Needing a win and having batted the last two weeks with limited success Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won another toss and this time decided to insert the visitors on a season’s best, perfect Brownsfield pitch. With pace and bounce available Ediriweera and Theunissen raced in and Amersham capitulated against the Thatcham attack. Ediriweera bowled a perfect shape outside the off stump and was the perfect foil to Theunissen who was as hostile and pacy as at any point during the season. He struck first removing Andrews courtesy of a fine catch at short leg by Robb Fraser and then it was a procession as the fired up Berkshire paceman took out the Amersham top order. Owen was caught behind without scoring, New Zealander Warner fell into the trap and was beautifully caught by Jim Ettridge at deep square trying to hook for 1 and Hamilton-Pike was snapped up by Ediriweera at slip for 9. The Sri Lankan then got in on the act bowling Stephenson for 2 and when Bennetto, who was the only batsman to show any sort of resistance, was caught behind off Theunissen for 32, it was left to Ediriweera to polish off the Amersham tail as three batsman all departed without troubling the scorers.
Rajabali was the last man out for 4, leaving his astounded skipper Ward, who had come in at 7, unbeaten on 12. Amersham were skittled for 77 runs in just 19 overs and both of the Thatcham bowlers picked up 5 wickets each, Ediriweera 5-19 from 10 overs and Theunissen 5-53 from 9 overs.
It was an splendid display of quick bowling, Ediriweera clean bowling 4 of his victims and with one LBW, it was a testimony to the excellent areas he put the ball. Theunissen, who has had a difficult few weeks, answered his critics in the best possible fashion as he bowled with pace and aggression that had the Amersham batsmen ducking and diving around the crease in order to survive.
With the time only at 3.00pm, the umpires turned the sides straight round and it took the home side just 11.1 overs to knock the runs off and although both James Ettridge and Matt Denness went cheaply, Ediriweera and Chris Wright finished the job off in ever threatening skies in double quick time. Ediriweera completed a fine all-round match racing to his 50 off just 33 balls and Wright finished unbeaten on 27, from just 17 balls.
It was a stunning display from the home side, with the game all over at 3.45pm and next weeks trip to third placed Marlow cannot come soon enough.
