Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Marlow Park on Sat 10 Jul 2004 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report Thatcham kept up the relentless chase of leaders North Maidenhead with another 20 point haul against Marlow Park at Brownsfield on Saturday and are doing everything possible to catch the leaders, who were themselves enjoying another 20 point win, bowling out Marlow for 95, although obviously scares were encounted on the way as they were 7 down when they passed the required total. Both sides know that any slip up now could be hugely costly and it’s pressure cricket all the way in from now on.

With the threat of rain looming large, Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and again the only possible decision was to insert the visitors and make the most of the conditions available. Quick wickets were the target for the first 10 overs and Bradman Ediriweera and James Theunissen responded, Ediriweera bowling Salina for 0 and Theunissen nailing Hussain, bowled for 2. Ediriweea then produced a great slower ball to fool Howlin for 11 and at 29-3 from the first 10 overs, Marlow Park were reeling. Mo Jawed is a class act however, and he was settling into his stride, but his partners kept falling around him. The dangerous Hanif was brilliantly run out by Steve Bird for 2 and debutant Tim Mahoney took care of Khan, well caught by Chris Wright for 13. Johnson had introduced himself into the attack and he accounted for Nazir for 1 and then Ashton for 0 as Jawed became increasingly frustrated both at the lack of support on offer from his team mates and also Thatcham’s policy of keeping him off strike which worked very well. Edwards came in at 9 with his side 130-7 and did a job a good job helping Jawed reached a chanceless 50. They added 20 until the
re-introduction of Ediriweera bought apart Jawed’s downfall as he picked out Robb Fraser at long-on, the former skipper making no mistake and Jawed was on his way for 73. Edwards continued to chance his arm, but then ran out both Ali and his skipper Shaffquat, both without scoring, which wrapped up the innings at 155 all out from 42.2 overs. It was a much better bowling and fielding performance from the Thatcham side, the bowlers finding good areas and they were well backed by some excellent out-fielding. Ediriweera was the pick of the attack, finishing with 3-28 from his 12 overs and Johnson 2-27 from 10, Theunissen 1-35 from 11 and Mahoney 1-22 from 6 all weighed in with good contributions.
With the break for rain in the visitors innings, the match was reduced to an 86 over game, giving Thatcham 43 overs in which to reach their target and Bradman Ediriweera and Robb Fraser opened up for the home side. Marlow Park’s overseas
Pakistani Mubashir Nazir took the new ball, and with an almost perfect replica action of Shoaib Akhtar he came flying down the hill with some serious gas. It was Edwards however who drew first blood as he caught and bowled Ediriweera for 5, but it did not take long for Nazir to strike, Robb Fraser fending off a lifting delivery to Shaffquat in the gully for 11. Steve Wyatt then fell to the innoculous looking Ali for 7 and at 37-3 from 12 overs, the home side were up against it. With Steve Bird and Chris Wright both struggling with injuries, Johnson joined Matt Denness out in the middle and the pair formed the partnership which was to win Thatcham the game. Mo Jawed replaced Nazir after a pacy opening spell and with Denness under huge pressure to get a score, he responded magnificently, guiding his skipper through some testing overs from Jawed, who was cutting the ball off the seam either way at will. Fortunately for Thatcham, both Edwards and Nazir were niggled by injury and although Jawed was bowling well at one end, once again there was no support and the runs were leaking from the other with Salina, Hanif and Shaffquat all unable to halt the advance from Denness and Johnson. Denness reached a super 50 and with the rainclouds once again threatening, both decided the game needed to be finished quickly. Even the re-appearance of Nazir was in vain, both batsmen hitting him to the ropes and his comeback was just the one over as he was taken off again as Denness laid into Hanif, smashing successive sixes off the hapless off spinner. The score went to 155-3 with Johnson on 45, needing a six for a well deserved 50, but it wasn’t to be, the Thatcham skipper settling for his 10th four and 49 not out at the close, with Denness making a fine 63 not out and the 7 wicket victory was complete.

With North Maidenhead facing a tough away trip to Harefield, Thatcham must make the most of their visit to May’s Bounty and a Basingstoke 2’s side that is possibly the weakest in the division.
Thatcham welcome back James Ettridge to the opening slot, although attacking spinner Chris Bird is still unavailable, so Tim Mahoney will continue to deputise.
If Chris Wright doesn’t overcome his slight knock, then veteran keeper Graham Tillen could be re-called to the side, with Nik Stewart unavailable and Stephen Bird also struggling with an ankle injury.
