Maidenhead & Bray v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 14 Aug 2004 at 12.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 3 wickets

Match report Thatcham 2nds travelled to Maidenhead and Bray on Saturday with hopes of keeping their outside chance of promotion alive with a win against the team in second place.

Maidenhead won the toss and elected to bat on a tired looking wicket. They were soon racing along as opener Dobson (60) took his chances and tucked into the luckless Gary Hatfield.

However, despite the quick scoring Thatcham managed to regularly take wickets with Nick Voller 3-34 taking care of the top order and the introduction of Perry Moore 2-37 tempting Dobson into another big shot before beating him in the flight and hitting middle stump.

A useful 40 runs from Middlesex U19’s Yousef Qureh guided Maidenhead to 181 all out in 41 over with the tail having no answer to the wobble, deception and faint whiff of WD40 of Tim Mahoney 4-25.

Tea was taken and was a little disappointing with a lack of Jaffa Cakes, Sausage rolls and the addition of trees to the egg sandwiches was totally uncalled for.

Thatcham began their innings in the face of tight bowling from Kiwi skipper Worrell who accounted for the out of luck Bill Beaumont (2) and with the genuine pace from Yousef Qureh. However, with 59 overs available Thatcham knew they just had to bide their time on the rapidly deteriorating wicket and the runs would come.

Cameroon Livingstone Smith (22) worked hard and with Matthew Denness following up his superb hundred the week before with a well crafted (55) Thatcham looked to be cruising to victory. However, Denness was plum LBW as the wicket produced a high class shooter and a responsible (17) from Paul Jenkins was halted with another LBW Thatcham appeared to be making things difficult.

Skipper Jamie Fisher (13) and Andy Harland batted well and the re introduction of pace man Qureh proved costly as Harland punished him with three boundaries in his two over return. However, with the return of skipper Worrell Harland perished for (33) and Thatcham hearts were pounding.

Nick Voller and Tim Mahoney (0 not out) decided that to finish the game quickly would be silly and decided to leave the Maidenhead boys out in the field for the full 59 overs (unlucky). Voller squeezed 9 runs in the previous 5 overs before smashing the 3rd ball of the final over high over extra cover for 4 for a fine Thatcham 3 wicket victory.
