Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 9 wickets

Match report Sulhampstead and Ufton 3rd XI verses Thatcham 4th XI (5th June 04)

The dream of a 4th XI captain is to have a strong side and no last minute cry-offs or call-ups. Well that dream came true today for Thatcham and they reaped the rewards with a good 28-point win.

On a day the forecast promised to be the hottest yet this year, the weather conditions at the start were humid and overcast. Thatcham won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Sulhampstead got off to a steady 3 runs per over start, until the 11th over when Thatcham had their first success. Dinusha Dissanayaka taking the first wicket of the day. Some tight bowling and fielding followed, holding the run rate down to 2 an over for the next seven. The first ball of Neil Stevenson’s six over spell saw Tom Donnelly take a superb catch with the score then at 52 for 2 off 18.

Over the next 20 overs, with the weather clearing, Sulhampstead’s run rate picked up. Thatcham persistence saw wickets from Stevenson and Stone before Sulhampstead put together a 50 partnership for the 5th wicket.

The Thatcham opening bowlers returned in the 35th over and Nathan Redmond broke the partnership while bowling a spell of 5 overs, 2 wickets for 7 runs. Dinusha Dissanayaka mopped up the other 4 batsmen with a spell of 5.4 overs, 4 wickets for 9 runs, ending the Sulhampstead innings in the final over.

Sulhampstead closed on 140 all out.
By the time Dave Taylor and Darren Sopp opened the Thatcham innings the weather was as hot as promised.

Thatcham set off at a comfortable pace but quickly accelerated to more than 6 an over. Some good running between the wickets, some glorious strokes and some thunderous blows took the Thatcham total towards the required 141. The 18th over saw the 100 partnership and Darren Sopp’s 50. Dave Taylor’s 50 followed the over after that and the pair looked set to see out the innings.

In the 20th over an innocuous looking ball down the leg side turned off Darren Sopp’s boot and onto the stumps bringing Neil Stevenson to the middle. He did not get chance to get off the mark though as Dave Taylor struck his 8th boundary to score the winning runs off the first ball of the 21st over.
Thatcham win by 9 wickets, picking up 20 points for the win, 5 bowling points and 3 batting points.
