Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v Theale & Tilehurst on Sat 19 Jun 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 17 runs
Match report
After midweek player trading with the 3rd XI and the usual Friday night search for that last 2 or 3 players the team still looked ok. The weather conditions were changeable but the wicket looked a good one. The winner of the toss could reasonably decide either way. As stand in Captain Mick Stone did just that he decided to bat.
This proved to be an excellent decision as Kelvin Aubry (68) and Bill Fry (59) went about building an opening partnership of 118 in the first 20 overs. A cavalier knock by Dinusha Dissanayake (67) included one of the biggest 6s that Henwick has seen for a while. With Dinusha capably supported by Alex Aubry (16 not out) a 4th wicket partnership of 61 was built.
After the loss of a wicket in the 39th over left Thatcham on 230 for 6 the declaration was made.
All reports of the game listed the tea as a highlight. Perhaps we can contract the Aubry’s to do tea every game…..?
With 51 overs to bowl Theale out the new ball was given to Nathan Redmond (13ov 48 for 5) and Dinusha Dissanayake (17ov 55 for 4) for an exhibition of (4th XI standard) quick bowling that left Theale at 37 for 5 off the first 12 overs. As the bowling started to rotate Theale built a dangerous 6th wicket partnership of 119 that looked like it might threaten the Thatcham total. However the reintroduction of Redmond brought this to an end in the 33rd over leaving Theale 150 for 6. As the tail proceeded to wag, Redmond’s spell of 6 overs 3 for 21 proved the key to ending the resistance but not before Theale had gone into the extra overs given to them by the declaration and got 213 runs. A good win but perhaps could have been easier than it ended up.
Thatcham win by 17 runs and pick up a maximum 30 points (20 for the win, 5 batting points and 5 bowling points).
And so we go into the 2-week mid season break top of the table 17 points clear of Finchampstead 5s and 29 points clear of Newbury 3s. That gives us some chance to recover our health and prepare for facing first Newbury and then Finchampstead for the first 2 games back.
