Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v Newbury on Sat 10 Jul 2004 at 2.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report More midweek selection negotiation and the usual Friday night search for the last player, was done in expectation of not getting a game given the weather. As expected Henwick was called unplayable but the Newbury captain said that their ground at St Barts was ok. So Mick Stone had to go back to the shops and buy stuff for the tea after all, and we all drove down the road to Newbury.

On arrival it was wet! The last downpour at 1:30pm had made the pitch a complete pudding but that was rather what we expected. So with a late start and a reduced overs game agreed, we held the toss. Newbury won and invited Thatcham to bat, which was ok as that is what we might have done if we had won the toss.

Kevin Aubry (51) and Neil Steveson (60) led the charge to gain as many runs as possible during the rain showers. With good mid order contributions from Mark Jurgens (24) and Mick Stone (14), Thatcham closed after our allotted 40 overs on 187 for 6. A respectable total that was perhaps 50 more than expected given the conditions.

For all his complaining about how it would have been better if he hadn’t been messed around, Mick’s tea was all right.

After the break the opening bowlers restricted Newbury to a slow 2 an over for the first 14 for the loss of 2 wickets. Will Thornton looked dangerous and bowled very well off a third of his normal run up. After the opening and closing spells he finished with figures of 11ov 2 for 15. His opening spell was well supported by Alex Aubry who turned in an excellent 6ov 0 for 10. This platform allowed the spinners to have loads of runs to play with, and so captain Piers Bragg brought himself on. With an unusual 11 overs he took 4 for 54. With Neil Stevenson and Gavin Ansell having short spells in rotation without joy, Peter Smalley came on to bowl a tight 6 overs 2 for 17.

It was obvious with 10 overs to go that Newbury had shut up shop and the reduced overs worked against Thatcham who could not get the last 2 wickets for the victory. So we played out the overs with Newbury closing on 127 for 8. A winning draw for Thatcham was frustrating in the end but given we only just managed to get on at all, not an unreasonable result.

Thatcham get the winning draw and pick up 19 points (10 for the winning draw, 5 batting points and 4 bowling points).

With a trip to second placed Finchampstead next week, it’s a top of the table clash that could be the key match-up of the season. So we will look to take a nice strong side.
