Finchampstead v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 17 Jul 2004 at 2.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report A trip to second placed Finchampstead for a top of the table clash that could be the key match-up of the season. On arrival the conditions were good and so was the wicket. Very long boundaries meant that there would be lots of running and a potentially low scoring game. Finch won the toss and after failing to defend a total earlier in the season invited Thatcham to bat first this time.

A quick fire 19 from Martin Keep contributed to a solid start by the top order running along at just under 4 an over and taking Thatcham to 93 for 2 off the first 25 overs. Then Finch introduced a left arm spinner to the attack and Thatcham lost the key wicket of Neil Stevenson for 30. With some tight bowling the runs dried up and in the 31st over Darren Sopp departed for 29 with the score only moved on to 99. As the mid order fell for the addition of 25 runs in the next 6 overs Thatcham were looking at a slim total with the score at 126 for 7 in the 38th over. However the seasoned campaigners in the Thatcham lower order wagged the tail. Contributions of 13, 18 and 14 from Bill Fry, Tony Glinos and Peter Smalley respectively took the Thatcham total on to 170 all out in the 45th over.

With Dinusha Dissanayanke and Tony Glinos opening the bowling we had great expectations of taking early wickets. However, Dinusha’s third ball was indicative of the first 20 overs. Very fast and a super line, the batsman new nothing about it as it flew off the edge and straight between the keeper Mark Jurgens and first slip Mick Stone for 4 runs. It was only after one of the Finch openers had to leave the field hurt (No it wasn’t due to the bowling) that Dinusha had some joy taking the first of his 2 wickets in the 19th over.

As Finch reached 65 for 1 after 20 overs a double change allowed for wickets to be bought. Piers Bragg picking up 2 for 20 in 5 and Neil Stevenson picking up 1 for 20 in 7 with a fantastic diving catch by Adam Bigwood.

As the game went into the last 10 overs it was looking like going to the wire. Finch needed 55 to win off 60 balls with 6 wickets in hand. This was before the intervention of Tony Glinos though, who returned for a second spell of 4 overs, 3 maidens, 4 for 6, including a double wicket maiden. This was ably supported by the return of Dinusha at the other end with 5 overs 2 maidens 1 for 12.

After the loss of their skipper, the 9th wicket, in the 40th over Finch were needed 31 to win off 24 balls, but with the return of the injured opener they shut up shop for the draw. Despite all the efforts of the Thatcham team we could not dislodge the last man.

Thatcham get the winning draw and pick up 18 points (10 for the winning draw, 4 batting points and 4 bowling points).

Next week we entertain West Drayton who are the only side to beat us this season. Lets hope for a strong side and return the favour.
