Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v Baileys on Sun 13 Jun 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
Thatcham played host to the West Indian nomadic side Bailey’s XI on Sunday and thanks to a good fightback from the bowlers and fielders and a 158 run opening stand ran out comfortable winners by 9 wickets.
The visitors were given first use of an excellent track but started cautiously against the pace of Bradman Ediriweera and the Sri Lankan made the breakthrough in the fifth over when Lewis drove to cover. Ben Cruise was unlucky not to take a wicket as a simple chance offered by E Bailey went begging at mid off but Ediriweera dismissed him lbw next over with a good slower ball.
P Bailey and K Christmas then put together an aggressive partnership and the run rate started to rise, especially with Ediriweera coming out of the attack. Bailey played second fiddle as Christmas went on the attack, with any delivery apparently fair game.
The total had raced past 100 inside 20 overs and the home side were facing up to the possibility of chasing well over 250 in 40 overs. Billy Beaumont offered some hope when he trapped P Bailey plumb in front for 29 but Christmas was still there and still smashing the ball to all parts, not always where intended.
Chris Bird had caused problems and Christmas’ aggressive approach was always likely to offer chances and so it proved as the Trinidadian tried for one big hit too many and skied the ball towards long on where Ediriweera took a fine running catch to send him on his way for 60. At this stage the score was 154-4 from 27 overs and Thatcham now set their sights on keeping the total below 220.
This was achieved thanks to some fine bowling from Liam Redmond (2-34) and Bird (3-41) with more than a little assistance from the Bailey’s batters. T Bailey tried to hit Redmond into Hampshire but only succeeded in giving Ediriweera his second catch and the third followed soon after, this time off Bird and all three were fine running efforts. Redmond and Bird picked up one more wicket apiece before Ediriweera (3-18) bowled the last man for 0 and the innings ended on 169 from only 33.4 overs.
Thatcham opened up with skipper Robb Fraser and Ediriweera and with a game of football (France won) to watch they soon had the run rate up to six an over. The Sri Lankan left hander scored the majority of the runs and made sure he kept most of the strike but both players found the boundary regularly. Lewis was unlucky not to take a wicket, he went past the edge of Fraser’s bat on several occasions and had Ediriweera dropped twice in two overs, the second one resulted in a six which brought up his fifty.
The century partnership came up in the 15th over and there seemed to be little the visitors could do to stem the flow of runs. Fraser eventually found some fluency and a flurry of boundaries brought up the 150 stand and the captain’s own half century.
Unfortunately the pair couldn’t quite finish the job as Fraser chipped a catch up to mid off and departed for 53, with eight fours and a six, but Ediriweera finished the job in the next over, only the 24th of the innings, with his third six immediately followed by his 12th four as he ended undefeated on 93.
