Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v Falkland on Sun 20 Jun 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
Thatcham’s second eleven ran out comfortable winners against their counterparts from Falkland in a Border League fixture at Brownsfield on Sunday. Ben Thomas won the toss for the visitors and elected to bat on an excellent surface. Thatcham started very well as they reduced Falkland to 30-4 in the ninth over with the Redmond brothers Nathan and Liam doing the damage after the early withdrawal from the attack of Robb Fraser. Nathan had Thomas caught at mid on, then Liam bowled Ian White off his pads and David Bloor followed soon after as he shouldered arms to Nathan Redmond and the ball cut back to take his off stump. Rasman then gave Paul Jenkins the first of four catches before the experienced Wilson Carlisle set about rebuilding the innings.
He received good support from Richardson (15) as they took the score to 71 when the latter was bowled by Ben Cruise. Ridley then helped add 34 before becoming Cruise’s second victim, well caught at slip by Daniel Fanospaur. Piper fell soon afterwards to Adam Bigwood (1-27) but Marson offered Carlisle good support, staying with him for 10 overs while 41 runs were added.
Carlisle reached a well deserved half century but the introduction of Terry Knoesen (2-11) brought an end to his innings as he clipped his first ball to Jenkins at backward square leg and was gone for 61. Marson then gave Nathan Redmond his third wicket and Jenkins his fourth catch but the last pair managed to add 20 before Furr fell to Knoesen for 8. The innings closed on 173, a total the Thatcham bowlers contributed 45 wides to. Nathan Redmond finished with 3-17 from his nine overs, Cruise 2-28 and Liam Redmond 2-16 from 6.
Martin Keep and Paul Jenkins then got Thatcham off to a good start against the spin of Ridley and the pace of Marson. They dealt almost exclusively in boundaries and both players looked in fine touch. Unfortunately, and typically, Keep had a rush of blood and charged up the track to Ripley to be stumped for 20 out of a partnership of 51 in 10 overs. Steve Bartholomew followed soon after, bowled by Marson for 3 but Daniel Fanospaur helped take the score to 79 before he was bowled by Inglut for 10.
Thatcham needed 95 with plenty of overs to spare but with the weather closing in they needed to try to finish the job as quickly as possible. Robb Fraser joined Jenkins and immediately upped the run rate with a flurry of boundaries. Jenkins reached an excellent fifty against his former club and then Fraser really got going, taking advantage of a short leg side boundary to hit four sixes and then three consecutive fours to bring up his fifty from only 28 balls.
The match finished in the 25th over as Fraser hit his fifth and sixth sixes to finish 63 not out with Jenkins undefeated on 65, an innings that contained 13 fours and showed touches of real class.
