Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v Andover on Sun 25 Jul 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 2 wickets

Match report Thatcham II won their fourth Border League game of the season with a tight two wicket win against Andover II on Sunday.

Andover were sent in to bat and made a decent start, reaching 30 in eight overs before Robb Fraser picked up the first of his three wickets for 42. A fine catch by Gavin Ansell saw the second wicket at 50 and one run later Martin Keep held onto one at slip. Nathan Redmond bowled a good tight spell at the other end but when he was replaced by Ansell Thatcham really took the initiative.

13 year old Hadfield looked very impressive before Ansell found his edge and Keep held onto an excellent catch at slip. Ansell then bowled Robertson and Piers Bragg’s (2-38) arm ball accounted for Andrews, well caught by young wicketkeeper Kieran Lynch. Andrews followed soon after as he became Ansell’s third victim.

Jackson and Green then added 37 before Green advanced down the wicket to Bragg and Lynch removed the bails in a flash. Fiddes didn’t last long as Adam Bigwood (2-24) removed him in his first over but Jackson hit some lusty blows to take the score to 158 before he was Bigwood’s second and Lynch’s fourth victim.

Ansell was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3-32 and Lynch put in a very promising performance behind the stumps.

With just under four an over required Martin Keep and Darren Sopp played sensibly but Keep didn’t let any opportunity to score pass. They added 40 when Keep, in traditional style, went for one big shot too many and was caught for 28. Simon Heaver struck a couple of powerful boundaries before he was caught behind for 10 and when Sopp (10) and Ryan Dillon were bowled in the same over from Fiddes Andover felt they were back in the match with Thatcham 59-4.

Fraser then joined Phil Makings and the pair looked set to finish the game in quick time. They added 36 in four overs with Fraser smashing 23 off 11 balls before going for a wide one and getting caught behind. Makings took over at this stage though and showed flashes of his true ability. He scored all 19 runs in partnership with Ansell and then received good support from Bigwood to take Thatcham to within 13 of victory with as many overs left.

When Bigwood and Nathan Redmond fell though the visitors were back in with a chance but Lynch capped a fine all round display by holding up his end as Makings farmed the strike as much as possible. They inched towards the target until, with two needed, Makings went down the track and crashed the ball straight to bring up the win with more than nine overs to spare and he finished on 45 not out.
