Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v Swindon on Sun 01 Aug 2004 at 2.00pm

Match report
Match report supplied by Phil Makings
An innings of withering power and laser guided precision from Robb Fraser guided TTCC Sunday Dinky Doos to a comfortable victory over Swindon last Sunday. Fraser scorched his way to a monstrous 154 including some trademark shots from the man with legs of Goliath and the cricketing know how of Brearley. Quite a combination.
The innings began as it meant to go on, with Keep playing his own trademark innings. There were several sparkling shots, provoking optimism in the watching crowd of thousands that he would get his head down and craft the innings that we all know he is capable of, and would dearly love to see for entertainment value. Alas, Martin went for one shot too many, and found himself back in the showers for an attractive 12. Meanwhile, Ribbs was easing himself in, showing a particular interest in the deep midwicket area when the bowlers dropped short, but brutalising anything too full. One on drive stands out in the memory in particular. He was joined at the crease by Donnelly, who showed some fantastic shots, pulling and driving with confidence. Unfortunately, he slightly mistimed a cover drive and was caught. He’ll score many runs at Brownsfield in the future, though. Fraser was still bulldozing on, even taking time out to demonstrate to their uppity ‘keeper that his chat was just as crisp as his timing. Nathan Redmond was batting well at the other end, playing straight and looking to make the most of his promotion up the order. Fraser raced on to 150 in a flurry of shots, raising the landmark with a calf-sized six that landed somewhere near my flat in the centre of Reading. This was preceded by a drive to wide mid on and an extra cover drive that were, quite frankly, sick. Sadly, he holed out soon after, having died by the sword he lived by. This bought the somewhat disastrously hungover Makings to the crease. He profited from some lax fielding to pick up a couple of boundaries and managed not to be sick on the hallowed turf of Thatcham, which is more than he could have hoped for at about 1:30. Knoeson replaced Redmond, and scorched a couple through the covers, looking good for a well made 22. Bigwood and Ansell ran well, and pushed the score on to an imposing 298-6.
The fielding performance subsequently was a bit of a comedown from the batting heroics, with it all feeling a bit flat. Wynne picked up the important wicket of the opener and bowled a good line throughout. Chapple produced a fantastic spell of accurate bowling, ripping out the heart of the Swindon batting with 3 wickets, and was on a hat-trick at one point. It was a shame that ECB guidelines stipulated that he had to come off after 6 overs, at he was really starting to hit his straps, with two wickets in his last over. Lynch was keeping well, recovering from a dropped catch (something of an epidemic of butter-finger-itis seemed to hit the entire cordon) to take 3 catches, and move his feet well. Redmond and Knoeson were adept first change bowlers, always asking questions of the batsmen. Ansell continued from where he left off last weekend, bowling an excellent line and length and was rewarded with one of the catches of the millennium from young Donelly who leapt high, arched his back and took a breath-taking one handed catch above his head. His nonchalance post-catch was fooling no-one, though – he was chuffed as. Bigwood also came on towards the end, and perhaps suffered a bit from wandering attention in the field and wasn’t as ably supported as he deserved.
Overall, a performance of two halves perhaps. Fortunately the brilliance of Fraser was bright enough to overshadow any lackadaisical efforts in the field. Bien joué Robb!
