Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v North Maidenhead on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Against all the odds, Thatcham won their opening game of the 2009 TVL season with 4 balls to spare at Brownsfield on Saturday.
With a team featuring a mix of youth and experience and names people would struggle to recognise due to unavailability and injury Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson knew his side would be up against it from the start. Winning the toss, he elected to stick the opposition in and containment would be the key and any wickets taken a bonus. It was the veteran Jamie Bishop who took the new ball alongside 17 year old Daniel Stephenson and the 2 did a superb job, Bishop conceding just the 19 runs from his 10 overs and Stephenson bowling with good pace and discipline troubling the North Maidenhead openers from the start. Nick Bishop replaced his elder brother and immediately had Ashraf caught at slip by James Ettridge for 26. Bishop then bowled Shaw for 28 and with Johnson replacing Stephenson, the two spinners started to turn the screw. Malpass was bowled round his legs by Johnson and the dangerous Ferrar then proceeded to sacrifice both M Khan and Asghar with some suicidal calls to keep his own wicket intact, both run out’s the work of superb fielding by Nick Monger. Ferrar reached 50 and then needed to go on for his team but Nick Bishop had other ideas and nailed him lbw for 51 playing across the line of the ball.
Johnson then bowled Botha for 3 and had A Khan caught behind for 7 and although Simon Carter put bat to ball at the end to finish on 25* the North Maidenhead total could only reach 197-8 at the end of the 52 overs. Pick of the bowling for the home side was Nick Bishop with his 3-47 from 16 overs and he was ably supported by his brother Jamie, 0-19 from 10 and Dan Stephenson, 0-40 from 10. Johnson was the other wicket taker with 3-85 from his 16 overs. The goal was to keep the visitors under 200 at the start of the innings so at the halfway stage it was a job well done.
Thatcham’s reply didn’t start well, Rakesh Patel departing early without troubling the scorers, soon to be followed by Jamie Young for 9 and when 26-2 became 26-3 with the experienced Ettridge nicking Khan to the keeper Thatcham were in all sorts of trouble. Duncan Johnson joined Nick Bishop at the crease, Bishop reaching double figures before he was caught and bowled by Dozell for 12 and 52-4 was the result. Johnson and Matt Denness added 40 before Denness holed out at mid off to Amin for 18 and then Chris Rochfort was lbw to Ashraf without scoring. The home side 113-6 from 35 overs needing a further 85 runs from 13 overs at a rate of 6.50 an over and wickets running out. Enter young Steve Bartholomew who turned the game on it’s head with a brilliant cameo of 32 including five 4’s and a 6 in good time, taking the pressure off his skipper at the other end who had passed 50 and was looking well set by this time. The pair added 64 runs in 9 overs keeping above the asking rate before Bartholomew skied one and was well caught by Khan off the bowling of Ferrar. Johnson then took centre stage to see the game home, hitting Asghar for 11 off the 46th over and taking 7 off Dozell’s 47th over to leave just one run required from the final over. Johnson was later to find out he was on 99* and although one run was needed for the win and he was on strike, a leg bye was taken to win the game leaving the Thatcham skipper stranded, just one run short of a deserved hundred. It was a great knock under pressure and included ten 4’s and three 6’s and left his side with a win they would hardly have been expecting at the start of the day’s play and 20 valuable TVL 1 points in the the quest for promotion back up to the HCPL set up.
