Tring Park II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 23 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Thatcham maintained their solid early season form with a determined and nail biting last over victory at Tring Park on Saturday.
Having won the toss, Thatcham stand-in skipper Dan Stone inserted the opposition and the ever improving Dan Stephenson soon removed opener Pritchard thanks to a sharp slip catch from Steve Wyatt. Despite a solid spell from Jamie Bishop (1-47), Tring accumulated steadily as Thatcham’s attack lacked penetration on a benign surface. With former Surrey batsman Atkins (110) looking comfortable throughout, Tring were set for a challenging total before Nick Bishop (4-50) and Chris Bird (2-59) dragged things back with a late flurry of wickets to leave Tring on 208-9 from their 52 overs.
In reply, Thatcham raced to 36 in just 5 untroubled overs before the chaotic run out of opener Jim Ettridge set about a Thatcham collapse that saw them slump to 46-4, with only Rakesh Patel (34) making any impact.
With the continued absence of several key players and a lengthy Thatcham tail, the last recognised batting pair of Matt Denness and Chris Rochfort simply had to score runs. Showing impressive character and determination, the pair relished the responsibility and soon got into their stride with a fine mix of resolute defence and positive stroke play in a 120 run partnership that took Thatcham within sight of a once improbable victory. But with just 22 required from the final 5 overs, the reintroduction of the impressive Dan Boniface (7-47) saw a tired Denness depart for an outstanding 79 and when Rochfort (42) fell shortly after, Thatcham’s chances of victory were suddenly in the balance.
Chris Bird (13) took to the challenge and with a series of scampered runs, reduced the deficit to just 6 from the final over. After a dot and leg bye, Bird smashed Boniface over extra cover for 4 to level the scores, but the drama wasn’t over as Bird fell very next delivery and with just 2 balls remaining Thatcham still required one for victory. But they needn’t have worried as Nick Monger crashed the very next ball to the point boundary to secure a hard fought and nerve wracking 20 point haul.
