Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v High Wycombe II on Sat 30 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
A buoyant Thatcham side moved up to 2nd place in the Thames Valley Div 1 with a comfortable 8 wicket victory over High Wycombe 2’s on Saturday at Brownsfield.
On a glorious day, High Wycombe skipper Keith Newell had no hesitation in batting after calling correctly at the toss and Thatcham took the field with the returning Paul Jenkins opening the attack with Dan Stephenson. It took a while for both to settle and Newell and Curzon-Thompson took full advantage of some loose deliveries although Stephenson in particular was desperately unlucky although he got his reward in the 10th over as Newell smashed one straight at Nick Monger at point and the he took a great catch lowdown to dismiss the dangerous High Wycombe skipper for 20. Both seamers were replaced by the spin of Nick Bishop and Duncan Johnson and Bishop was soon in the wickets again, Scriven driving straight to Johnson at mid-on for 4. Vandyk was the new man and now with two left handers at the crease Johnson turned to the off-spin of Nick Monger in tandem with Nick Bishop and had Thatcham taken their chances the the Wycombe innings would have been in disarray, but both batsmen were dropped off the unfortunate Monger, who was replaced by Chris Bird and a partnership of 76 was posted before Dan Stephenson returned and sent Curzon Thompson’s stumps cartwheeling for 70.
Bird meanwhile was finding superb rhythm and control and was inspired ripping out the visitors middle order with a fine display of left arm spin bowling. Vandyk was caught by Monger for 44, Hussain was bowled for 5 and Jawed was stumped by the impressive Chris Rochfort for 11. Johnson returned to mop up Bridges, bowled for 1 and Higgins, who was expertly caught one handed on the boundary by a running Stephenson from the last ball of the innings for 5 as Wycombe posted 192-9 from their 52 overs and they would have been desperately disappointed after being 47 without loss after the first 10 overs. It was a fantastic comeback from the home side led by Bird who finished with superb figures of 3-31 from 13 overs and he was backed up by Johnson, 2-19 from 8, Stephenson 2-44 from 11, and Nick Bishop 1-27 from his 8 overs.
Thatcham openers Rakesh Patel and James Ettridge strode out to the middle confident of the task ahead, but the home side were soon in real trouble as firstly Patel had his stumps rearranged by Robinson for 6 and then Ettridge was lbw to Vandyk for 4 to leave Thatcham 18-2 from 6 overs. It needed something special from Daniel Stone and skipper Duncan Johnson and they didn’t disappoint with an unbroken partnership of 178 to win the game at a canter in the 40th over. Stone was in sublime form, his cover driving was crisp and had the home crowd gasping with some of the shots that came from his flashing blade and Johnson, returning to the side after missing the victory at Tring, was content to play a mature anchor role although his timing throughout was a joy to watch and both players complimented each other beautifully. Stone finished unbeaten on 89 and Johnson 84 as the Wycombe attack found no answers with which to silence either batsman, Johnson hitting the winning boundary to give his side another 20 point haul in a so far unblemished season.
Thatcham travel to Amersham next, who took over at top of the table although the West Berkshire side are only 2 points behind them and a victory at Shardoloes, which has been a happy hunting ground in the past, could see Thatcham take top spot as we head into the June fixtures.
