Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Maidenhead & Bray on Sat 27 Jun 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report Maidenhead & Bray came to visit Brownsfield on Saturday and were sent packing in a comfortable 10 wicket victory by a bouyant Thatcham side with former Pakistan international Ali Naqvi to the fore with a 5 wicket haul and a second successive century since his delayed arrival.

Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and inserted the visitors and Naqvi and Peter Edgcombe shared the new ball for the home side. Edgcombe struck in his first over, Khan driving wildly and Chris Bird took an excellent catch above his head in the gully. It didn’t take long for Naqvi to get into the action either, Bashir well caught by Johnson, again in the gully for 5. Tysoe then edged Naqvi and again Chris Bird caught well, this time at slip and when F.Chaudrey was comprehensively bowled by Naqvi, the visitors were in all sorts of trouble at 26-4 from 15 overs. It needed a partnership and Arjun and Bezuidenhout supplied just that, adding a useful 68 runs to the score before Johnson nailed them both. Arjun was smartly stumped by Stone for 40 and then Bezuidenhout was clean bowled for 36 by the Thatcham skipper to put his side back in the driving seat. Chris Bird then got reward for his spell as he trapped Rodger lbw for 13 and when Naqvi was bought back into the attack, he took care of Brooks for 20 courtesy of a terrific diving catch by Steve Wyatt at slip and Coyne for 4. Naqvi had 5 wickets and it was left to the last pair of S.Chaudrey (17*) and Langley (2*) to guide their side to the end of the 52 overs with 168-9 on the board.
All the Thatcham bowlers did a good job, led by Naqvi, 5-42 from 13 overs and he had excellent support from Johnson 2-26 from 9 overs, Bird 1-30 from 12 overs and Edgcombe 1-12 from 8 overs.

Naqvi and James Ettridge began the home sides reply in confident fashion with 20 coming from the first 2 overs and it was clear that 168 was never going to enough on a decent pitch and a lightning outfield. Both batsmen played superbly, Naqvi carrying on from the week before displaying shots all round the wicket leaving the bowlers absolutely no room for error and he had the perfect foil in the hard working Ettridge, stubborn and resolute, ticking the score over at the other end. It was the 2nd 100 wicket partnership between the pair in successive weeks and they were making light of the run chase. Naqvi reached a super 100 and from there the victory was never in doubt as the pair reached 172 without loss from just the 28 overs to secure another 20 point haul and take Thatcham to the top of the table, level on points with both Amersham and Harefield in a title chase which is sure to go down to the wire.
