North Maidenhead v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Thatcham stayed 5 points clear at the top of the Thames Valley League Division 1 on Saturday with a 20 point victory at North Maidenhead with youngsters Paul Jenkins and Jamie Young holding their nerve and batting with maturity way above their years to see Thatcham home after early setbacks had threatened the leaders unbeaten run.

Winning the toss, Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson elected to bowl first and Ali Naqvi and Peter Edgcombe opened up with the new ball and bowled with accuracy and movement from the off, never giving the home side a chance to settle and soon the North Maidenhead top and middle order was ripped out mercilessly. Ashraf was lbw to Naqvi for 5, Khan fell to Edgcombe for 2 courtesy of a stunning catch by Johnson in the gully. Ricky Martin edged Naqvi to Dan Stone behind the sticks for 7 and Stewart went the same way for 18 followed by Ferrar for 9 in identical fashion and Naqvi was on a roll. Edgcombe was not to outdone however, picking up the next 3 wickets to fall, Peachey caught by Matt Denness for 6, Bromhead was bowled for 10 and then the important wicket of NM skipper Simon Carter, caught at slip by Chris Bird for 9 and the home side were 88-8 from 28 overs and in real danger of imploding. Saleen and Aziz though had others ideas and decided the best form of defence was to attack and although Naqvi did everything he could to break the partnership, a mix of good strokes and a lot of luck saw the frustrated paceman’s final two overs go for 36 runs as the partnership grew more and more worrying for the visitors. Johnson’s decision to take the pace off the ball soon changed things though, as Aziz hit one straight to Paul Jenkins lurking on the deep mid-wicket boundary and he departed for 35. It was a more than useful partnership of 56 however and it pushed the home side up to the 150 mark. Saleen was the last man to go, Chris Bird introduced to the attack and he trapped him lbw with the very first ball he delivered and NM were all out for 152 in the 40th over. Peter Edgcombe was the pick of the Thatcham bowlers, his 16 overs producing fine figures of 4-49 and he was well supported by Naqvi, 4-71 from his 16 overs, Johnson, 1-10 from 5 and Chris Bird, 0.1 overs 1-0.

With 60 overs in which to achieve their target, Thatcham openers Naqvi and James Ettridge were immediately attacked by Aziz and Ricky Martin as NM had nothing to lose and knew they had to bowl Thatcham out to stand any chance of a result. Aziz claimed the prize scalp of Naqvi in the very first over, the ex Pakistani international feathering a leg side glance to Carter behind the stumps for 2 and this really got the home side fired up. Dan Stone was then caught in the gully for 8 and suddenly Thatcham were 27-2 and in trouble. Johnson joined Ettridge and although quick runs came from the skippers bat, he didn’t last as Bromhead got one to lift and Martin took an easy catch in the gully to remove the Thatcham skipper for 23. Matt Denness then suffered in a mix-up with Ettridge and was run out for 1 and when Ettridge was bowled by Bromhead for 23, the visitors were in disarray at 67-5. The score became 77-6 when Rakesh Patel was lbw to Bromhead for 5 and all of sudden Thatcham were staring down the barrel with the top 6 in the pavillion and only half the total achieved. The young pair of Paul Jenkins and Jamie Young had other ideas though and although Young was targeted by Bromhead and Martin in a sustained attack of short fast bowling, it was to Young’s credit that he never took a step back and toughed it out for his side with Jenkins, who showed great maturity in the way he played and helped Young through the testing time. Both players attacked where possible and applied stout defence when needed as they edged closer to victory. NM skipper Carter shuffled the bowling attack regularly but Jenkins and Young were not to be denied as they saw their side through to a memorable victory and it was fitting that it was Young who crashed the winning boundary through point to finish on a superb 48 not out and Jenkins ended on 33 not out as Thatcham reached the target in the 33rd over and collected yet another 20 points in their quest for the title and promotion, keeping the unbeaten run going for the 10th game in a row.

Next up for the West Berkshire side is a return to Brownsfield for Sri Lankan Bradman Ediriweera with his Chesham side, who will also include ex-Hungerford all rounder Robbie Maier and ex-Kenyan international Hitesh Modi in their ranks in what is sure to be a really tough test for the leaders who will be missing James Ettridge, Nick Bishop and Dan Stone who are all unavailable. Steve Wyatt and Danny Williams should return however.
