Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Harefield on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at **12.30pm** Earlier start time
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 94 runs
Match report
Thatcham were beaten at Brownsfield for the first time this year in the league as second placed Harefield narrowed the gap at the top of TVL1 to just 4 points with 2 fixtures remaining.
Thatcham Skipper Duncan Johnson lost the toss for only the second time this year and Thatcham were asked to bowl by the diminutive Harefield skipper Akshay Reddy, on what proved to be a good batting track.
Harefield got off to a flyer, hitting the boundary regularly thanks to Nkala & Hammerton, who played the unusually subdued Thatcham attack with relative ease. Both batsmen did have a large chunk of lady luck with them as both Naqvi & Edgecombe hit the stumps without the bails being removed. This partnership would prove crucial as Nkala & Hammerton went on to make match winning contributions of 60 & 121 respectively.
The start gained by the opening pair allowed the remaining batsmen to play freely and propelled the total in excess of the 250 mark. Nick Bishop (9-22-1) & Chris Bird ( 9-56-2) bowled reasonable well to contain the opposition, but the pick of the bowlers was Duncan Johnson (15-82-4).
Scarred by memories of Thatcham chases past, the Harefield skipper elected to use the full allocation of overs & effectively batted Thatcham out of the game as they finished on 279-7 from 52 overs.
Thatcham started their reply solidly making 50 off the first 10 overs. However, when Naqvi was adjudged LBW for an entertaining 40 & Dan Stone went without scoring, the shape of the game changed.
A steady partnership between Steve Wyatt & Jimmy Ettridge looked to be leading Thatcham to safety & at 133 for 2 with only 16 overs remaining the draw looked inevitable. This all changed when a risky single was taken & the fielder threw down the stumps, Jimmy Ettridge was on his way for 41.
Steve Wyatt then attempted to cut a ball that was too a tad too close to him & was smartly taken at 1st slip for a fine 42. The wickets then proceeded to fall at regular intervals until the last man Dan Stevenson was bowled with an over & 3 balls remaining. Harefield were docked a point for a slow over rate, which meant they took 24 points with them while Thatcham collected 7.
Lets not forget, we are still top with 2 games to play, so it's us who are in the driving seat.
The toss will have major implications on the last 2 games for both us & Harefield, but we need to forget about Saturday, focus on Maidenhead & Bray & keep doing what we have been doing for the majority of the season and we hopefully we will come out on top.
