Match report A first Trout hundred for youngster Bobby Brown saw Thatcham convincingly beat local rivals Newbury to get back in the title race.

Having won the toss, Young made no hesitation in batting first on another fine Brownsfield wicket. The returning Williams opened up and got the home side off to a flyer as he smoked 50 from just 38 balls. Klichowicz provided great support as the pair put on 65 for the first wicket before Mills (1-60) found the edge of Williams a ball after he brought up his 50. Klichowicz fell soon after to Anstey (1-71) to leave Thatcham 75-2 in the 18th over. From then on in it was one way traffic as Young and Brown put on a 175 run partnership in just 25 overs. A perfect blend of strike rotation and heavy hitting put the Newbury bowlers to the sword. Brown in particular was in imperious form as he struck 3 large sixes on his way to three figures. Young however, fell just short of his hundred as he was bowled looking to push on for late runs. The speed in which Thatcham scored their runs allowed Young to declare after just 45 overs, setting Newbury a target of 278 to win in 55 overs.

Thatcham knew it was going to be tough to take 10 wickets on a good pitch but they started well as green removed Kingston (8) and then Kundar (0) inside a few overs. A partnership grew between Anstey and Mitchard, with the former particularly quick to pounce on anything short. Thatcham knew this was the big partnership to break and Denton-Powell provided the breakthrough for the home side as he produced a brilliant bit of fielding to run out Anstey for a well made 44. From then on in a steady flow of wickets followed with the Thatcham spin twins of Christopher Bird and Hemming getting into their work. Bird removed Singh for 8 and then Hemming first had Sengupta (6) caught and then followed that up with the big wicket of Mitchard who made a fine 52. 3 more wickets fell to the spin of Bird and Hemming before a last wicket stand of 32 in 10 overs frustrated Thatcham. However, the early declaration proved vital as the returning Green knocked over Pammula (21) in the 49th over to bowl Newbury out for 174. A fine effort with the ball for Thatcham as the wickets were shared 3-apiece between Bird, Hemming and Green.

Half way through the season and only a handful of points separate the top 4 in the league with Thatcham yet to hit their best form. They looked to make it back to back wins next week as they host Wokingham at Brownsfield.
