Match report Thatcham edged ever closer to the league title after a thrilling tie away at White Waltham on Saturday which leaves them requiring just another 21 points to be champions.

Playing away at White Waltham hasn’t always been the happiest of hunting grounds for Thatcham and so they were aware of the potential banana skin this could be. With availability light, Director of cricket, Simon Lewis was called up to open the batting with Klichowicz. The pair got off to a steady start as they looked to build a solid platform. A combination of a slow outfield and a required hip replacement for Lewis meant scoring was tough but the pair battled through. The 50 partnership was brought up in the 12th over courtesy of a glorious Lewis cover drive. It wasn’t until the 22nd over the hosts struck as Klichowicz was bowled for 37, putting to an end a 93 run opening stand. Lewis then soon followed after reaching his 50 and trying to up the run rate. The Ginger Lara was promoted up the order to number 4 as Thatcham continued to look to up the run rate. He did not disappoint, striking his first ball to the fence for 4. Two further boundaries followed before he was bowled, but his 17 off 8 deliveries gave Thatcham the momentum they were after. Young joined Brown at the crease at 135/3. Brown continued to look in great form, passing the 500 run mark for the season, a fine effort from the youngster. Young looked to keep the scoreboard ticking over but struggled early on as Brown took the initiative. Brown soon reached his inevitable 50 and Young followed suit shortly after. The pair put on 94 in just 12 overs as Thatcham were aiming for the 250 mark. Young played one shot too many and had to depart for 60 and in the very next over Brown also had to go for 56. Wickets continued to fall as Thatcham looked for quick runs but a fine cameo from debutant Madhasaravanan (15 off 8) got the score up to 254-7 off the allotted 45 overs.

The White Waltham reply got off to a flying start as Chapman and Idrees took the game to the visitors knowing they needed to get ahead of the rate. It took until the 14th over for Wheeler to strike, finding the edge of Chapman. Waltham continued to score quickly and Thatcham knew they had to take wickets to get back in the game. Madhasaravanan did just that for the visitors as he removed the dangerous Idrees (72) on the stroke of drinks. Thatcham then really squeezed the opposition as Madhasaravanan and Brown looked to turn the screw. Top league run scorer Furness (20) was removed by Madhasaravanan and Brown removed the Waltham skipper just 2 balls later. The score changing from 126-1 to 131-4 in a fantastic 7 over spell for the visitors. Both spinners continued to threaten and claimed a further wicket apiece. Jathavedan was proving a thorn in Thatcham’s side though as he and Thomas carried out a late assault to get the hosts close. Needing 11 to win off the last over, Young threw the ball to the reliable Bird. With 2 needed off the final ball, Jathavedan struck the ball to long off, where Klichowicz was fielding. A direct hit from the boundary saw the Thomas run out looking to get back for the second and the spoils shared. 254-7 played 254-7.

A game that could have gone either way with both sides feeling they had won the game and lost the game at different stages. Ultimately, 16 points each for both sides. With second place Purley losing, the Trouts have opened up a 25 point gap at the top and a win against Cove at Brownsfield on Saturday will see them crowned champions.
