Newbury v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 02 Sep 2023 at 12:30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won

Match report Thatcham ended their campaign on a winning note as they beat Newbury by 82 runs on Saturday to finish 30 points clear at the top of the table.

Thatcham were batting first after winning the toss and knew they would have to work hard on a pitch that was offering plenty for the bowlers. Shanmugasundaram struck early for the hosts as he had Jamie Young strangled down the legside for 1. Brown went next as he suffered a rare failure, although finished on a total of 596 runs for the season, the second highest in the league. Wheeler followed soon after and the game was in the balance when Jack Young joined youngster Sheridan-Hawkins at the crease. The pair took the game to Newbury, particularly Sheridan-Hawkins who played wasn’t afraid to hit over the top and played some fine shots on his way to 40. A partnership of 59 with his captain in less than 10 overs tipped the game in Thatcham’s favour. It took a beauty from Mills to remove Sheridan-Hawkins who looked nailed on for a big score. Young was next to go, and a steady trickle of wickets continued to fall. Denton-Powell showed his class on his way to 27 but he was the latest Thatcham player guilty of getting in and not going on. It was left to Hemming (29*) to bat out the overs with useful support from first Oscar Moore (10) and then Odhinn More (15). A quick 17 from the power-hitting Bird got Thatcham to 216-9 from their allotted overs. Despite no-one going on to get a big score, a fine effort with the bat when 150-160 would have been around par.

Fresh from his wickets last weekend, Green took the new ball with the returning Odhinn Moore. Green was straight on the money causing problems for the Newbury openers. Moore struggled to find his rhythm early on as Newbury looked to get off to a fast start. Green’s patience was rewarded as he picked up the Newbury top 3 in quick succession. Brown was introduced into the attack and struck almost immediately by removing Sengupta and Smith, this leaving him level on wickets with veteran Bird for the season. Not to be outdone, Hemming was also keen to increase his wicket tally for the season. He first claimed Anstey, then Sastry, both for 6 and finally Ferguson (21). All 3 wickets being caught by Young. With Newbury 8 wickets down and over 80 runs shy, Young threw the ball back to Brown and Bird to fight it out for the leading wicket taker spot. Brown however had other ideas as in his first over back he removed both Herdman and Shanmugasundaram, leaving Bird no opportunity to respond. A fine effort by Thatcham in the field, Green (3-34) led the way with Brown (4-13) and Hemming (3-26) backing him up meant that Newbury were all out for 134 inside 35 overs.

A fitting end to the season for the Trouts who have dominated the league and extend their unbeaten run to 10 games. A special mention to Brown for his 596 runs and 28 wickets who has been the real lynchpin of the side, but everyone has stepped up when needed. 3 Thatcham batsman ended up in the top 10 leading runs scorers for the season, with Klichowicz and Young both averaging over 30 and Bird and Brown also made up the top 7 wicket takers in the league.
