Southgate v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 18 Apr 2009 at 1.30pm I think **TBC**
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs

Match report Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson took his side all the way to North London to face Middlesex Premier League outfit Southgate on Saturday and came away with a creditable performance, if not the victory he was looking for to kick the season off in good style.

With a side boasting the youth of 17 years old’s Daniel Stephenson and Nick Monger and 15 year old Hampshire prospect Jack Andrews blended with the experience of the likes of Johnson, Nick Bishop, James Ettridge, Chris Bird and Matt Denness, Thatcham won the toss and elected to bowl on a surface that looked as if it would offer plenty of help for the young seam attack of the visitors. Paul Jenkins and Stephenson opened up tidily but in the 6th over of the game disaster struck as Jenkins once again aggravated a medial ligament injury whilst fielding and could take no further part in the game. With just 10 men it was now going to be a real struggle, but Andrews took over from Jenkins and the two youngsters bowled well, showing good potential and Stephenson was rewarded with a wicket. Johnson swapped the bowling around giving Nick Bishop and Chris Bird the chance to bowl together in tandem and they applied the necesssary discipline to put the brake on the Southgate scoring. Nick Monger showed useful glimpses of both leg and off spin bowling and Andrews came back for a spell at the death and showed excellent contol bowling full and straight and was also rewarded with a well deserved wicket. Southgate finished their 45 overs on 222-5, and it was a good effort in the field from the visitors 10 men and gave the batsmen a score to chase.

With the main focus being that the batters get some time at the crease it was a good workout as three of Thatcham’s top five were amongst the runs, James Ettridge starting the season well with a crisply compiled 56, Daniel Stone showed some excellent touches and glorious cover driving for his 35 and Matt Denness was his usual unorthodox self in a well struck 45 and with only McDonald and Johnson departing cheaply it was excellent practice. Andrews also showed his potential with the bat, scoring 15 and Nick Monger put bat to ball at the end with 17 not out as Thatcham finished their 45 overs 30 runs short on 192-8, which given the circumstances was a very creditable and pleasing effort.
