Royal Ascot v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 30 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 98 runs
Match report
Thatcham II’s backed up last week’s improved performance with their first win of the season away at Royal Ascot.
After some more fine tossing from Robb Fraser the visitors again elected to bat first but with 18 overs gone the decision looked to have back fired with both openers back in the shed and only 35 on the board. However, Stuart Newman continued his fine run of form and Simon Rider, returning to the side after his brother Neil finally gave him some time off work, formed an excellent partnership that took the game away from the hosts
Rider nudged, nurdled and tickled his way along, turning ones into threes and keeping Newman on his toes. Newman meanwhile simply put away all the bad balls that came his way while he got his breath back from all the running at the other end. Rider was finally bowled for 47 when Weston was brought back into the attack but their partnership of 138 meant the remaining batters had the freedom to play their shots with ten overs left and 42 needed to reach 200 and maximum batting points.
Newman then lost a bit of momentum as Sean Huckins fell to a cunningly disguised full toss for 1 and Steve Bartholomew (12 n.o) showed everyone he could be the ideal nightwatchman should the need ever arise.
Newman regained his momentum with consecutive sixes off May as he neared his maiden Thatcham century. Bartholomew tried his best to stop him getting there, calling a suicidal single which fortunately the bowler couldn’t gather. Newman fell soon afterwards for a superb 110 as tiredness took its toll, his innings included 11 fours and 4 sixes. Fraser then played a quick cameo of 21in the last two overs to ensure maximum bonus points as Thatcham closed on 220-5 from their 52 overs. May with 3-85 and Weston 2-42 were the pick of the bowlers.
With the wicket showing signs of breaking up, and a lack of options, Thatcham opened with the spin of Perry Moore and John Williams with the old ball. Not the ideal way to play cricket but the league rules allow it so…….
Davies and English made their intentions clear, with the latter hitting his second ball for six. However it didn’t last as Williams in particular found some rhythm and produced a beauty to bowl English and then again showed how dangerous a full toss could be as Davies miscued to square leg where Gavin McDonald covered all of three yards to pull off a fine running catch.
Sweetman and Towse continued with the attacking policy, scoring at four an over, but with the wicket continuing to disintegrate batting became harder and harder. Williams got the classic left armers dismissal as Sweetman edged to the excellent Jamie Young behind the stumps.
The introduction of Tim Mahoney, whose first ball flew from a length over the batsman’s head, brought the fourth wicket, Kendall lbw. Weston decided to try to hit everything but was soon bowled by Williams who then took his fifth wicket as Towse’s resisitance ended when he chipped on straight back to the bowler and the score was 69-6 with 26 overs to go.
G Baker and Wensley then put together a decent partnership, surviving the new ball and edging past 100. Perry Moore came back on and almost immediately got the breakthrough as Baker top edged to Young for 28. When the same bowler trapped Wensley lbw in his next over Thatcham still had fourteen overs to take the final two wickets but were made to work hard as D Baker and May dug in. They survived for nearly eight overs when Baker couldn’t resist trying to go over the top and was easily caught at mid off off Moore and three balls later it was all over as May drove what looked to be a certain four until it was intercepted by a full length dive by Rider who held on brilliantly with one hand.
25 points well earned with all three bowlers doing a superb job, Williams finishing with 5-60, Moore 4-31 and Mahoney 1-28.
