Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Cookham Dean on Sat 06 Jun 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by four wickets
Match report
Thatcham II slipped to their third defeat of the season, going down by four wickets at home to Cookham Dean.
With conditions perhaps favouring the bowlers and the game reduced to 94 overs Robb Fraser still continued with the bat first policy of recent weeks, which looked to have backfired as they crashed to 38-4 in the 11th over as Pres and Amit Patel took out the top order. Steve Barthtolomew and Jamie Young, whose combined age equalled the total when they came together, set about putting their team back on track with some fine counter attacking shots and running between the wickets.
They were comfortably on top of the bowling when inexperience showed as first Bartholomew holed out to long off for 25 and then Young (27) miscued an ambitious pull one run later to leave Thatcham 95-6 after 22 overs. John Williams also fell to a disappointing shot soon afterwards and with a maximum of 24 overs left Thatcham were 106-7.
Perry Moore, who came out looking as though he wanted to return to the pavilion to watch the rugby, started to rebuild the innings with Fraser. Moore put the bowlers off, moving around the crease and lashing out at everything while Fraser offered decent support in a fifty partnership before he was bowled for 22.
If Cookham Dean thought they were through they reckoned without the resilience of the old man of the side Tim Mahoney. He showed great coolness in supporting Moore who continued to look more like a number eight than nine as he stroked his way past fifty with another glorious thrash and Mahoney got in on the act with a towering straight six. He finally fell for 20 but the partnership of 74 gave Thatcham hope. Jamie Bishop was bowled by Nunn for 4 as the innings closed on 236 with two overs unused, Moore unbeaten on 62. Amit Patel (3-51) and Nunn (2-29) the best of the visitors bowlers.
The Cookham openers, Millar and Edlin came out with positive intent and got their team off to a great start. They were soon going at five an over as Thatcham missed a couple of half chances but the introduction of Moore brought the breakthrough as first Edlin (44) and then Bibby were caught by Williams, 96-2 after 22.
Millar was troubled by Williams but kept going well and Lamben continued the positive vein of the innings. With Thatcham keeping attacking fields to try to get wickets Cookham were always up with the rate but three quick wickets gave Thatcham a bit of hope. Millar finally went for 71 but Lamden, now the key, kept putting the steady flow of bad balls away.
He was joined by Austin with fifty needed off seven overs which they got down to four from the final over. Moore bowled it well, taking a wicket with the scores level but Cookham got home with a ball and four wickets in hand. Moore completed a fine all round performance with 3-40 in 10 overs, Williams 2-86 and Bishop 1-55 were the other wicket takers.
