Match report Thatcham Town 2nd IX returned to Brownsfield this week prepared for a tough match against Thames Valley Cricket League Division 3B leaders Slough 2nd XI.

Having won the toss Thatcham Town skipper Robb Fraser had no hesitation in electing to bat first to obtain maximum batting points. The wicket had a greenish look and was next to the 1st team wicket from last week which provided plenty of bounce. I.Nawad exploited the conditions to best effect with a fantastic display of controlled seam bowling which lasted for 26 overs resulting in final figures of 5 for 63. Only Simon Rider (43), Stuart Newman (47) and Jamie Young (24) settled in against the consistent bowling by I.Nawad. With constant pressure on from one end the batsmen had to capitalise on the bowling from the other end which they failed to do. This resulted in some poor stroke play and dismissals which played straight into Sloughs hands. Only Perry Moore (18no) with a late flurry helped to get Thatcham to their final total of 9 for 192 off their 52 overs.

In the field Thatcham Town had to strike quickly to have a chance which on this occasion failed to happen. Opening with spinners John Williams ( 6 overs 1 for 34) and Perry Moore (12 overs 1 for 42) couldn't get any assistance and Slough were soon underway with hard hitting from S.Khan( 41) before Stephen Bird took an excellent catch on the boundary to dismiss the opener. This brought A.Ahmed to the crease who then proceeded to hit the ball well and along with some below par fielding and dropped catches allowed him to score 71 before his dismissal by Nick Monger (13 overs 2 for 88) who bowled very well in difficult conditions. It was then left to O.Jamshad (28) to tick off the final runs needed however he failed to see it through to the end as Simon Rider (2 overs 1 for 2) removed him in the penultimate over. Thatcham Town narrowly missed out on an extra bowling point with Slough finishing at 5 for 196 off 36.5 overs.

A tough match for Thatcham however having now played the best team in the competition they can look to develop key areas of their game over the upcoming weeks and keep the dream alive of promotion to division 2 with second place only 18 points away.
